An American-Russian Alliance Against China?

Harry K. Kazianis, American Conservative: The Coming American-Russian Alliance Against China

Why not? A rising power challenging the international order can make even sworn enemies into bedfellows.

While the progressive left sees a Russian spy around every corner, there is a very real possibility that Washington and Moscow will collude for a very big reason—and soon.

Both nations have a reason to fear a coming change in the international order that will impact them both. And as history shows us time and again, a rising power that seeks to overturn the international system can make the most dedicated enemies join forces—and fast.

I can only be talking about one thing: a growing and more powerful China.

WNU Editor: I have been hearing talk of such an alliance for a long time. But if it does happen, I would also add a number of Asian countries into this alliance.

Anon. History has taught us more than once that what is the status quo today, can be the opposite within a very short period of time.

"Trump would go it alone." After the November elections when the Republicans not only have a bigger majority in Congress but the members are more in sync with what Trump is ttying to accomplish he won't have to "go it alone,"

I've long suspected the Republicans and DJT would have big gains in November. The recent announced retirement of Justice Kennedy appears to confirm this. As a centrist, it's highly unlikely he is going to want an SC Justice of the kind Trump would select. By getting out now it will be easier to block a Trump appointee than it will be after the November elections. While I cannot "know" what Justice Kennedy is thinking, he is no doubt aware of such things.

Certain unscrupulous elements went out of their way to undercut a very careful and meticulous diplomatic effort with Russia before. It appears they are trying to do so again. It is imperative for America that this diplomatic effort succeed. I think we will get this done.

Russia's best interest at least is in not becoming too firmly attached to either the US or China. But if we could position ourselves the way China did in the second half of the original Cold War, that may be our best case scenario.

China gets it oil from the Middle East. The U.S.has the oil in Syria and is building bases there. Putin will stab the Iranians in the back. The deal is done.

Daniel,

That is interesting. As I recall, China had relatively cool relations with both countries except for a brief stint when Russia and china could have gone to war but they quickly backed off.

This approach especially has potential if, as I suspect, Russia and China either are the most powerful countries on earth or will be soon. While they won't necessarily like us, if we can ratchet down the tensions perhaps having "frosty" relations but not war we may be able to position ourselves very well. Unfortunately with the current crazies running things in DC in BOTH political parties who seem h!ll bent on conflict with Russia at any and all costs this is going to be EXTREMELY difficult.

Andrew,

"Putin will stab the Iranians in the back." Actually the key to solving the Iranian problem will be better relations with Russia who can act to restrain Iran. There has been less harassment of US vessels by Iran in the Persian Gulf. This is likely a result of Trump diplomacy. It is the only new variable. Essentially the Iranians understand that unconditional support of their violent and barbaric acts is no longer guaranteed.
