Al Jazeera: Former UN chief Kofi Annan dies at 80

Annan served as UN secretary-general from 1997 to 2006 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

Kofi Annan, a former secretary-general of the United Nations and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has died aged 80.

The Ghanaian diplomat passed away at a hospital in the Swiss capital, Bern, on Saturday after a "short illness", his foundation said in a statement.

"Kofi Annan was a global statesman and a deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world," the statement said.

"He was an ardent champion of peace, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law," it added.

WNU Editor: A mixed legacy in my book .... Syria, Rwanda and other failed conflicts threaten to overshadow Annan’s legacy (Euronews). IMHO .... it is also during his term that I felt corruption and nepotism became a problem within the organization that still persists.

Kojo Annan, Oil for Food in Iraq post Desert Storm and vast corruption associated with his son while Kofi was in charge. That misconduct badly tarnishes Kofi Annans reputation. As for Rwanda that is a permanent stain on many such as President Bill Clinton and Kofi Annan

Not much shine on this knight's armor anymore. Even some of those in the trenches doing the dirty work have a taint.
The vision of long ago has, in part, gone it's own way down the Clinton Highway.
