RFE: Russia To Hold ‘Biggest War Games In Nearly Four Decades’

Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has said the country is planning to hold its biggest military exercises since 1981 next month, Russian news agencies reported.

Shoigu was quoted as saying on August 28 that the drills, called Vostok (East)-2018, will take place in Russia's central and eastern military districts and will involve almost 300,000 troops, more than 1,000 aircraft, both the Pacific and Northern Fleets, and all Russian airborne units.

"This is the biggest drill to take place in Russia since 1981," Shoigu told reporters, according to the Interfax news agency.

I don't even think the United States and its "allies" could even mobilize 300,000 troops in a month, let alone have them ready for war drills. Sure, the numbers say the forces are there but to have them actually mobilized and ready to actually carry out any kind of war drills, I don't think so. Maybe US leaders need to think carefully before they unnecessarily provocative moves towards certain countries.

There is a such thing as making bold moves and then there is reckless stupidity. In my considered opinion, the actions of the US government are well into the realm of reckless stupidity.

Stephen,

Statements such as "America is the most powerful country in the world" or "America has the world's most powerful military" are subjective. We cannot "know" the answer without an actual confrontation.

Statements such as the number of troops a country has are objective. According to worldatlas Russia has 831,000 active duty army personnel. The United States has 1,347,300 active duty army personnel. Other websites reveal similar numbers. As such, your statement that they do not have 300,000 troops is incorrect. You may chuckle all you want.

Now can they mobilize 300,000 troops for war drills in a month? This is a legitimate question of which I will assume they can and will. If so, this is likely beyond the ability of the US to do so as I do not think we could realistically mobilize 300,000 troops and have them ready for war drills in one month's period.
