Forbes: Meet The Sniper Rifle That Protects Vladimir Putin

Being a world leader, particularly one as controversial as Russia’s current president, doesn’t come without its risks. The article is unduly harsh on the Dragunov. One of the better semi-auto .30 cal rifles available. Also include a Ruger Mini-30 and an Armalite AR-10. A small family.

The Dragunov design is based on the AK, but with tighter tolerances. Less amenable to mud and dust. What the Dragunov lacks in (very) long-range accuracy, it over-compensates for it in rapid sight-picture/fire recovery.

Versus an active medium range threat - like an ambush situation - the bolt-action T-5000 is a much slower machine. The T-5000 is bolt-action - IE: you have to manually cycle, eject and reload the chamber with a round via the bolt handle. (instead of a gas assisted, spring-loaded upper). Bottom line, its a 10 second shot recovery instead of 4 seconds. I doubt you'll ever see a bolt-action rifle inside the Putin security perimeter.
