Battle For The Syrian Province Of Idlib - News Updates September 5, 2018

Al Jazeera: Fighter jets hit Syria's Idlib targets as fears of battle mount

First strikes in weeks kill civilians and raise fears threatened push against last rebel-held province may be under way.

Air raids have pounded areas in Syria's last rebel-held province of Idlib, killing several civilians and raising further concerns that an all-out government offensive is only a matter of time.

The strikes on Tuesday came as the United Nations urged Russia, a Syrian government ally, and Turkey, which backs certain rebel groups in Idlib, to help avert a "bloodbath".

A full-scale military offensive would be devastating for the nearly three million people living in the province, including many rebels and civilians who were bussed out of other areas as they came back under government control.

There is no doubt that the Assad/Iran/Russia coalition will launch an all-out offensive to take Idlib province. A few features are inevitable:

1. The offensive will be a bloodbath. There is nowhere to which the rebels and civilians in Idlib can retreat.

2. No quarter will be asked or given by either side.

3. Turkey, which originally wanted Assad overthrown but has now joined the pro-Assad coalition, opposes this offensive. But Assad/Iran/Russia will ignore Turkey's warnings. Turkey will not allow refugees from Idlib to enter Turkey.

4. The West has few options here, because we have insufficient forces in Syria to impose our policy preferences. The USA/UK/France have all warned Assad not to use chemicals. If Assad does use chemicals (See 5 below) I am sure the West will bomb Assad. But any bombing will not prevent the offensive to conquer Idlib.

5. I predict Assad will use chemicals, even if they are not a military necessity. Assad will use chemicals to show the West that he is not intimidated by our threats. In this, he will be goaded on by the Iranians, who will encourage anything that will create Western distress and show Western impotence.

6. This will not be an easy victory for Assad/Iran/Russia. The rebels are desperate and will fight hard. Expect heavy casualties on all sides.

7. Idlib will not end the Syrian Civil War. After Idlib, Assad will next move against the Kurds in parts of Syria they control. The West seems to have no plans to prevent this. Perhaps we can't prevent it.
