CNN: Pentagon turns down request to send US Marines to Taiwan
Washington (CNN)The Pentagon has rejected a State Department request to deploy a detachment of US Marines to Taiwan to help safeguard the de facto American embassy there, three US officials tell CNN.
The decision to deny the request was made by Secretary of Defense James Mattis last month, according to two of the officials.
One defense official told CNN that prior to the request being rejected, military planners had anticipated the Marines arriving in Taiwan as early as next month.
Asked about the decision, a State Department official told CNN "we do not discuss specific security matters concerning the protection of our facilities or personnel."

We should first clarify what Taiwan wants. They have to make clear to the world what --they-- want. Why should we annoy China just for the sake of it? That's never what we should do to any country. If however the Taiwanese people can make their case in front of the world, I'm happy to listen and then we can discuss their standing as a nation or if they're part of China (we know what China wants, but the Taiwanese seem to want something else but are not clear about it. Their job to be clear)

Taiwan wants to be recognized as a nation and not be threatened with invasion.
While you average person in theory supports self determination, in reality they follow the gold or will not lift a finger.
I don't remember the president of Taiwan making the case in front of the UN. But I may have missed it or maybe China blocked them somehow. Happy to be educated ;)
Taiwan had a seat at the UN until China threw around its considerable butt, weight.
