Bloomberg: The City That Had Too Much Money
The black coupe pulled up outside the Starlight Casino in a suburb of Vancouver. The driver got out, greeted a man in a red shirt, and pulled two bulging white plastic bags from the trunk. He led the way into an empty noodle shop next door, where he handed over the bags before returning to the car. The man in the red shirt took the bags into the casino, through a cavernous glass lobby with signs in English and Mandarin. At a cashier’s desk, he opened one of the bags to present his cargo: thousands of green Canadian $20 bills, bound into loose bricks with yellow plastic bands.
The cashier’s counting machine would need to run continuously for more than 10 minutes to riffle through all the notes, which came to more than C$250,000 ($192,000). Converted into chips that could be cashed out later, whether or not they’d been wagered at the tables, the money would be spendable anywhere in Canada, unimpeded by questions of provenance.

Reality is that you do not have to invite in the richest 1% of the whole world into your country to where you can no longer afford to buy anything.
A significant portion of that 1%5 got their money via slave labor.

Lets put it this way. In the 1980s the universities divested themselves of doing business with South Africa and survived. Now they have to do business with Chinese sweatshops?
A little perspective; some or most of these Chinese are running from China getting away from the government. There have been many reports about this over the last few years with Chinese running to Canada (#1), US and Australia. Not sure we should "assume" this is some kind of invasion.
You cannot run from the Chinese government.
If you have relatives left in China they will try to get to you, if you displease them.

The buyer ban (which came into effect yesterday) has had an immediate effect on house prices.
Case in point: I live in a reasonably nice suburb in Auckland that has been devastated by rampant Chinese speculation (I remember taking my baby son for a walk in his stroller during a weekday only to witness bus loads of Chinese real estate tourists visiting open homes with the intent of purchasing).
With the buyer ban in effect prices have slipped to, on average, 10-15% below Council valuations...and this is heading into summer, the peak period.
