Asia Times: Doctor who helped find Bin Laden ‘unwell’ in tiny cell

Dr Shakil Afridi helped the CIA track down al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden but is considered a traitor in Pakistan. A new law will allow his conviction to be challenged in a higher court.

The doctor who helped the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) hunt down Osama Bin Laden – by running a fake vaccination campaign in 2011 – is being held in a high-security prison in Pakistan’s central Punjab, where he has reportedly been in very poor health.

Sources among Dr Shakil Afridi’s family and his lead attorney have confirmed that the jail authorities do not allow his lawyers to meet him. The family is also not permitted to deliver everyday essentials to Afridi, who is incarcerated in a tiny cell just 1.5 square meters (5×5 ft) in size in a heavily fortified jail equipped with high-tech security.

WNU Editor: In my book this doctor is a hero. And everyday he is in prison is proof to me that Pakistan is not serious in confronting and defeating terrorism.

Agreed. And Obama didn't get him out/influence the Pakistanis to get him out. Maybe Trump will

Trump will not.

Not unless people raise their voice.

Trump is transactional. He will respond to that.

The doctors imprisonments proves Pakistan was highly displeased that Osama was found out and killed. Pakistan protected him and his family.

Frankly, I'm embarrassed at our government tolerating this insulting situation. Kudos to the 2009 Nobel Peace prize winner for this situation. Followed up by DJT.
There has been some cutback in our financial aid to this chaotic collection of way-out-theres passing as a country. Just not enough. And unfortunately they do have some leverage vis a vis the supply situation in that other backward stone age muslim paradise to it's west.

The problem with stories like this is often in what's not reported.

#1) The killing of Osama bin Laden was an act of revenge and a political maneuver by Obama to portray himself as tough on terrorism. Not only did it have no effect on the prevalence of terrorism but there's enough evidence in the public domain to suggest that Saudi intelligence, including then Saudi ambassador in the US Bandar bin Sultan, actually supported the 9/11 terrorists but there's been an active campaign, including from Robert Mueller's FBI, to suppress that evidence.

#2) The use a fake vaccination program to track down bin Laden severely damaged the credibility of real US vaccination programs such that it probably did more harm than good.

I guess I am naive but I had long believed that Bush, before Obama, was out to get OBL in revenge for 9/11...are you thus saying we should have simply let him alone, not gone after him...I am afraid your political bias glows rather than shines in your remark. In counter terrorism we use what we can, and the vaccination program, faked, was used. But ignorance Tumps sanity, and many even in the enlightened US think vaccination a plot of some kine

Poor fella cannot spell anymore. One has to wonder about his other mental faculties.

Aw well, you cannot lose what you never had.

Pakistan has an A-bomb and enemies to the West and enemies to the East. Throw in the U.S., which is an enemy, because Pakistan has been so duplicitous.

Poor 'lil Pokiston (We must pronounce it the same way the boy king does so as to not diss him.) does not have enough A bombs to go around assuming that their nukes work.

Age and radiation are not kind to components.

Within ten years Pakistan could field 350 nuclear weapons, the report notes. According to Mansoor Ahmed, a nuclear expert at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, quoted in the Washington Post, that figure is inflated. He argues that the more likely number is between 40 to 50.
Nothing, then, to worry about, right?

No one raised their voice for the pastor that was just freed. No one raised their voices for the other people Trump got out. Just be honest. Trump does way better on that than Obama.

The guy was released NOT because of Trump but to win favor with the US because of the messy ongoing business between Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Turkey does nothing "to make nice" but to get what they want...in short: stop playing biases and look at thinks as real politics

sorry: should read
"look and think as real politics."
correction before some snot dumps on me, as is his custom

40 to 50 nukes means 40 to 50 to maintain. It gets burdensome after awhile.

Any in storage are targeted. The delivery means of the others is also targeted.

Fred cowers from North Korea, Pakistan, china, Russia, Iran, Venezuela or anyone who comes down the block.

Foreign policy should not be decided by craven cowards.

Craven cowards gave NAZI German the Skoda works and the means to invade France. So much for cowards.

Getting the Skoda works and the the military equipment of Czechoslovakia allowed Germany to contemplate to invade the USSR when it did. Do the Russians appreciate the implication of the Munich Deal and peace in our time?

Can a person ever get through to coward and convince them using logic or is the wimp factor too high?

Skoda works ... look it up.

God you're simple minded. If Trump had not asked repeatedly for his release - for almost 6 months now, the Turks wouldnt have released him ..there's of course an exchange of favors happening..that's always the case. Nothing is free in diplomacy. But without telling them you want him out and value his freedom, he wouldn't be worth being part of the deal or any deal. Get it? Good. Now go watch cnn and let Don Lemon tell you how to vote
