The Russians and the Chinese are already doing this. While we are just now to think about baby steps in this area and haven't even yet learned how to "crawl," the Chinese and the Russians are highly advanced and way ahead of us in this area. Essentially they are "running" like world class athletes with regards to their space based weapons programs.
It will cost allot because 1.)The US government lacks the ability to do anything efficiently. For example, Russia and China spend a fraction of what we do on their militaries yet theirs are every bit as powerful as ours and more so in many areas. 2.)we are way behind and if we are going to be competitive we must catch up very quickly.
How do we afford it? I'm not sure. Of course there is the option of acknowlon the superior positions of Russia and China, acting accordingly, and working to position our country to prosper within the framework of reality.
POTUS has opted for a different approach. He has chosen to try and make Ametica great. If America is going to be great, it will need to be capable of challenging Russia and China. To do so will require a space force.
As far behind as we Are, this'll be a tall order. We should be been working on this long ago.
