SCMP: South China Sea is Beijing’s top foreign policy priority with developing nations, US think tank says
Southeast Asia, with its close political, economic and cultural ties, is the most important developing region for China, Rand Corp says

I doubt the Chinese expected a trade war with this much force from the Americans. I'm sure they feel gypted that their payoffs to the "right sort" of Americans went for naught.
Trump is waging an all facets trade war with China that will impact China's strategy on a global scale.
The US trade model needs to shift in favor of anti Chinese SE asian countries so that they can help counter Chinese bellicosity in the region. If we did roughly the same trade that we did with China with these countries, like Taiwan etc, then they would become stronger and help dissipate Chinese hegemonic power and make it less of a threat over time. This would also reduce the need for the US to have such a large military presence in the region, and can therefor focus elsewhere. Goods would cost a little more with this shift, but its better than empowering your enemy in just about every facet so that they can challenge you in the future.
