It's a movie with a good message on the horrors of War but as a historical piece it has no basis in fact at all. That being said it was never intended to be factual in the historical sense and hit the nail on the head with the pacifist movement back the especially with the chaos of the then current Vietnam War. One of the most underrated and misunderstood war movies ever.
