Can The U.S. Afford A Massive Military Build-Up To Make Sure it Can Win A War Against Russia Or China

Michael Peck, National Interest: Report: America Needs a Massive Military Build-Up to Make Sure it Can Win a War Against Russia or China

But what is the strategy? What about the Middle East? How do we afford it?

If there is one theme that is present in a new report on American defense, it is the word “more.”

America needs more tanks, more submarines, and more stealth fighters.

And it needs to prepare to fight Russia, and China, while still maintaining its commitments in the Middle East.

Some would say this is a long-overdue step necessitated by defense budget cuts that have deprived the Pentagon of the tools it needs. Others would say this is national-security megalomania.

Either way, the report by the National Defense Strategy Commission, a bipartisan commission appointed by a quite partisan Congress to evaluate the Trump administration’s 2018 National Defense Strategy (NDS), does confirm what many already believe: that Russia and China are the biggest threats to U.S. security.

Can the US afford enough industrial raking machines to kill all the spotted owls that are causing forest fires from the rivers that flow to the sea slightly unimpeded?

Statistics tell us freedom isn't free. Fight more wars in southeastnortheruasiaoceania.

Anon 923,

You got pawned before and you'll get pawned now

Yes, Industrial sized. Dr Seuss would be impressed.

Seems when China fought in Northern Asia he lost his son to the USAF. Not his only son, but the one he knew about. He had abandoned 2 women he had started families with before.

Yeah that Northern Asian War did not go so well for China or Mao's son. Mao tried to hid his son deep behind the lines, but HQ got bombed.

Also Anon, you have no idea what a species is or the fact that two species or variants can crowd one another out. Like the barred owl crowding out the spotted owl. Or Red squirrels threatened by grey squirrels. But good ole Anon wants to blame loggers.

I think it's a matter of necessity. China shows all the tell tale signs of similar historic, military rises.. much like back in Nazi Germany the Chinese party rules by intimidation and total control/surveillance. Much like Nazi Germany they make outrageous territorial claims and build up their military. Much like Nazi Germany the Chinese have concentration camps, now more than 1 million people in it. Much like Nazi Germany they have a ruler for life now, who, much like Hitler has all of the army be personally sworn to him. Those are the facts. On top, China attacks the US and Europe on a daily basis and has stolen IP (from industry to defence) in the hundreds of billions, have human spies and "lobbyists" (foreign actors) all over Washington, NYC and the valley. On top we have trade violations left and right totaling trillions of copyright theft/infringements over the last 2 decades. We ARE at war with China culturally and economically already. We just seem to be too hopeful to think china will come to its senses. Well, they haven't so far and keep stealing from us, and weakening or defence through spying and other activities every day. Thank God that we have a leader like Trump who at least calls them out a bit. But we need to do much much more to combat and check their aggressions that have been building up for 2-3 decades now. We must not let them reach military superiority. Sure, they spend less on the military than us, but those are normative figures. Adjusted for purchasing power they are close. And if you adjust for the billions and billions they steal from us and our military secrets every year, they might "spend"/invest much more than us..they're building their military and economy on our backs and until we stop them, this will go on..Sure, they'll smile and shake hands, and say they'll stop. But talk is cheap and that's just the Asian way. I've lived there for years. ..trust me when I say they'll not respect weakness. They'll laugh at getting away with it

Gotta keep that naval edge. As for the Russians, just ignore them.

Anonymous said...

Ofc we cannot ignore Russians lol I know you're joking but I agree that they're culturally and ethnically closer to us, and just by population numbers they're just small fraction of the Chinese. Chinese are about 1.5bn now and Russia's population is shrinking and will be below 100 million (or 6-7% of china's size). Also in terms of gdp/econonic war, Russia is not a threat. Their economy is the size of Italy. .about 5%-10% of the US economy (depending how you count),while China is about 50% now -- and, without trump they'd be at 75% now.

My Chinese son, Ping Pong, recently got his degree in comparative religion from Chongqing University and then got a job in HR at Hunan United Farming Implements, AKA HUFI.

Pawned?

Is that some sort of fried shrimp dish? I'll mix it with some spotted squirrel and let you know how it turns out.

Russia is the country with the world's largest nuclear arsenal. Based on this alone absent anything else it would be unwise to ignore them.

Bposter nobody said ignore Russia. read again.

No actually I said to ignore Russia, at least until they reach the Vistula...until then it's just posturing.

Anon (1:14AM)

Anon (10:05PM) says "gotta keep that naval edge. As for the Russians, just ignore them." He/she is clearly suggesting to ignore the Russians. I always read a post in kts entirety before commenting and when possible try to evaluate each post within the context of what each person who I can recognize has posted in the past.

I think anon (1:35AM) is the same person as anon (10:05PM). Thank you for clarifying your position.

Thought he was joking. Ofc we shouldn't ignore Russia nor Iran for that matter. But the biggest abuser and enemy to freedom is China. No one comes close

Anon (10:44AM),

I saw nothing in the context to indicate that he/she was joking and very respectfully with anonymous posters I often lack sufficient context from previous post to ascertain intent. I agree with you regarding China being the biggest abuser. As far as the greatest military threat, I'd say Russia. Time permitting I will post on this later.
