Express: ISIS killer: After £100m re-vamp hated SA80 becomes world’s most lethal weapon

A REVAMPED version of the British Army’s rifle has been hailed one of the world’s “most lethal” weapons by military chiefs 20 years after its manufacturers received criticism over its poor performance.

The SA80 was so plagued with problems since the weapon, by Heckler & Koch, was introduced into the British armed forces in 1987 it was given the nickname the “civil servant” of guns.

Two decades ago the makers upgraded the hand-held assault rifle, yet soldiers still found it was ill equipped to perform in hot and sandy locations, and even jammed on occasion when it was loaded especially in theatre in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The weapon was then given an eye-watering £92million upgrade but it still did not do the trick, The Telegraph reports.

While the bullpup design increases stability and gives a longer barrel than a standard frame of similar length I am skeptical of its lethality over others in its class. It still fires the 5.56 NATO round and its fire rate is nothing outrageous. In this day and age a semi-auto high accuracy rifle wielded by a well trained fighter is still much more effective than assault class rifles. This is why we always hear of snipers having such high kill counts. Given this rifles poor development curve I'd say this is more a marketing ploy than an unbiased article.

Give me a 7.62 SLR and watch the SA80 operator run for his life.

The SA80A3 is a definitive improvement over its previous versions, but they are still some inherent design flaws. Try shooting it left handed and you'll get hot casing ejected into your face. The trigger pull is fairly long and heavy as well.

There are a lot of different service rifles out there, but arguably one of the best if not the best is the C-7 used by Canada. Although based on the American M-16/AR-15, the C-7 is a big improvement mainly due to the hammer forged, chrome-lined barrel that gives 1 MOA accuracy for thousands of rounds making it exceptionally precise for a battle rifle. The rifle is also very reliable.

There are a lot of arguments as to whether a bull pup (SA80) or a standard rifle configuration (C-7/M-16) is better. However, given the immense popularity of the M-16/AR-15 and nations like New Zealand dropping the bull pup in favour of the M-16 style, I would say that most prefer the AR-15/M-16 design.
