The Guardian: Nigerian Islamists kill scores of soldiers in military base attack
Islamic State claims responsibility for raid in ongoing insurgency in north-east
Islamic militants in Nigeria may have killed as many as 100 soldiers in an attack on a military base, according to media reports and security officials.
The reported death toll is among the highest since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in 2015 and comes as the country prepares for elections in three months.
The worst losses came when militants overran a military base in the village of Metele in the north-eastern state of Borno on Sunday.

These two items may be incongruous.
- (hint: the militants had better weapons)
- "large cache of arms, ammunition, and military equipment were carted away by Boko Haram fighters during the attack on ..."
Boko Haram still might want to cart away inferior weaponry to use as back up, to expand or for IEDs
Still it begs the question. If there were so much weaponry to cart away, why didn't the troops use it?
The reporting leaves much to be desired. Sure guns are boring and so is killing people. I'd much rather be at the beach. But damn Was the the military authorities stocking their base with ammunition of a calibre that their troops couldn't use? We don't know, because the reporters do not know how to report. Do journalist not know the acronym SALUTE? The media better get some 6 and 7 year old boys to ask questions for better reporting and to raise the bar. Boys that young could not do worse (except for the grammar).
SALUTE:
Size
Activity
Location
Unit
Time
Equipment
We do not know the equipment of either side. All the reporting is in generalities other than the body count.
I think the troops were psyched put by the letter. That and the guerillas have better mobility and intel.
By fleeing the troops took more casualties. They should not have fled, but maybe they did, because they did very little spadework. Bottom line is that the troops were on death ground and should have fought.
The troops seem very weak, but IMHO the fault lays with the leadership. These troops were as bad as the one in Mosul in 2014. In both cases IMO the fault lies with the military command.
PS I wonder about the ethnicity of the troops. I wonder if they were southerners that some northerners set up to get killed.
I also wonder why the boy wonder, Barack Obama dragged his feet on listing Boko Haram as a terror group. IMO he has a soft spot for Muslim terrorists.

i don't even understand who to believe: 7 Arm Trucks and they are under-equipped? what is really going on with our Military Forces? where is the Air Force in all these?
