Daily Mail: Russia jammed GPS signals over Scandinavia during recent NATO exercises, Norway claim

* GPS disruption came during NATO's largest military exercise since the Cold War
* Scandinavian air traffic officers were forced to issue warnings due to disruption
* Kremlin denies the allegations as they face mounting criticism in the West
* A Russian plane flew over the Trident Juncture exercises close to a US battleship

The Russians are the likely culprits behind disruption to GPS systems over northern Scandinavia during recent NATO exercises, Norway's defence minister said on Tuesday.

Finland's air navigation services were forced to issue an air traffic warning last week due to the massive GPS interruption in the north of the country.

Norway made a similar warning last month, days before the start of Trident Juncture, NATO's largest military exercise since the Cold War involving 50,000 troops in an area stretching from the Baltic Sea to Iceland.

Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila said on Sunday it was 'possible that Russia has been the disrupting party in this. Russia is known to possess such capabilities.'

I really wish the news media would get what type of ship right. We don't have battleships anymore. Probably a cruiser

So the Russians helped make the exercise more realistic? We should thank them.

While I would agree that it actually helped make it more realistic, it was a training mission - and as all readers on this blog now - lots of people die during training every year. Now, realism or not, I would have appreciated if the Russians stayed out of it/ would have signaled yamming of GPS in advance. it might have caused injuries or worse. And then what? Russians are so much fun to be around, but they have to start thinking about what they're doing sometimes

Actually no evidence has been publicly revealed, yet, that the Russians did it. There's another possibility that nobody's talked about yet that should be considered. A few years ago I was attended a military conference in Virgnia where high ranking military officers were talking about the necessity of training their forces to be able to operate in environments where things that we take for granted, like GPS, were denied. Isn't it possible that the denial of GPS was was part of one or more of the scenarios in Trident Juncture? I know it's politically correct to blame Russia for everything that goes wrong, but it's usually not true. I'd like to see some evidence.
