David Wroe, Sydney Morning Herald: US can't afford to stay ahead of China's military, former Pentagon official warns

A former top Pentagon official says the United States will struggle to stay ahead of China militarily if it sticks to its budget strategy of tax cuts and massive deficits.

The report by former deputy assistant secretary of defence, David Ochmanek, warns that if it loses its military edge, the United States could also lose the confidence of key allies and partners in Asia, such as Australia.

His report, to be published by the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney on Tuesday, coincides with the US pledge during the APEC summit to help redevelop the naval base on Manus Island, which could host Australian and American ships.

WNU Editor:  Every country that has pursued budget deficits to the extreme always end up with severe cuts in government programs and services to pay the interest and debt obligations that have been incurred. Can the U.S. afford huge spending programs and deficits without tax measures to pay for it .... eventually no. On a positive note .... China's fiscal house is also not healthy.

May I ask why not?

1)The Chinese military still has catching up to do

2) the Chinese GDP is estimated to be only half the size of the US (they got caught cheating /overinflating their GDP - see your satellite post on this a while back)

3) the Chinese habe to spend much more to overcome allies multiplier advantage only the US possesses

4) the US defence spending (normative and comparative) is bigger

OK the Chinese don't have to research as much as they steal a lot. BUT I'd expect the US (and Europe ) to want reparations for the hundreds of billions - if not trillions - of IP theft. Nothing is free. Not even thievery, as the more and more isolated Chinese will learn

So again. Why?

Well stated.

I'd have to see a dollars to dollars comparison of costs per weapon system and personnel costs.

The U.S Civil War bankrupted the U.S. It was not remedied until WW1.

The American Revolution bankrupted France.

The Duke of Marlborough would be forced to stop campaigning, because there was not money coming from Parliament. England survived. France not so much.

etc.
