Reuters: Trump says he does not like Russia-Ukraine situation

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said he does not like what is happening between Russia and Ukraine, a day after Russian crews seized Ukrainian vessels near Crimea.

“We do not like what’s happening either way. And hopefully it will get straightened out,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House.

Trump said European leaders were working on the situation. “They’re not thrilled. We’re all working on it together,” he said.

Russia knows it can keep nibbling away on Ukraine's territory and interests and get away with it. NATO is too distracted with Brexit, the Arctic, Baltics and infighting between the Germans, French and Americans. The EU is powerless economically and militarily to put a brake on Russian conduct. That Russian gas into Germany pays dividends daily for Putin.

Bottom line Ukraine is not a core interest to Europe or the United States like it is to Russia. Only so many miles to Moscow from there.

And America? we are indifferent, concerned, slow to react, asleep?

"Bottom line Ukraine is not a core interest...." This is correct. In the case of yhis corrupt, chump Ukrainian government this is especially so. There's certainly nothing there worth risking a military conflict with arguably the most powerful military force on the planet.

With nothing to gain by supporting the chumps and much potential gain by not doing so the proper course of action would seem to be drop the corrupt chumps. If this were an honorable government that is consistent with our stated values which it isn't, perhaps such support could be justified on moral grounds even if such supports runs contrary to America's national security and economic interests.

Anon (7:25AM),

Who sided with Russia? Was it Blackdog or me when each of us stated the obvious that Ukraine is not a core interest for America? I saw nothing in either post to indicate siding with Russia or Putin. Perhaps you should try actually reading the posts, evaluating the context, and for those who post regularly you can evaluate the context of previous posts such people have posted. If you do so, you might actually learn something.

Who is the "russkie plant?" I have noticed that when US government or media propagandists cannot support their positions based upon merit they resort to accusing those who oppose them as being "trolls" or "Russkie plants" or something similar. This way they can try and avoid having to support their questionable positions based upon any kind of logic. If one can immediately smear another this way, the hope is to avoid trying to support a weak position.

I've made it clear elsewhere who I am and where I can be found. If the Russkie plant pithy phrase was directed at me, it is without merit. I think you already knew this but were hoping to discredit me in the eyes of non regular readers.

Essentially the corruption of the Ukrainian government is easily documented. The editor has provided links to support this many, many times. Ukraine is not a core interest for America and its current government does not even line up with America's stated values. Nothing is gained by supporting it. There is much upside potential in cutting it loose. (In a similar fashion, there is much upside in excising a cancerous growth from a human body.) Russia is ARGUABLY the most powerful military force on earth. Even our military leaders are FINALLY starting to realize that there is no guarantee of victory in a war against them. (I figured this out long, long ago. Perhaps reality is becoming so glaring now that they can't simply ignore it.)

In this situation, you need to explain why and how a confrontation with Russia is worth it and somehow advances American interests. Very respectfully I don't think you can. As such, in the lacking any kind of coherent or reasonable argument to support your position you must resort to name calling such as "tiresome Russkie plant" or "overlord putinesca." You see, as an American, the American people are not pawns to be used on your chessboard for your amusement or the advancement of whatever special interests you may have that runs contrary to ours.

Fazman,

The elephant walk is an interesting analogy. Remember, as an Aussie, this costs you nothing. As an American, the heads of my loved ones are on the chopping block should this go awry. Very respectfully cheerleading for America to do this, that, or the other costs you nothing. Your loved ones are in no danger.

Now back to the analogy, elephant tusks fetch a great deal of money for their ivory. If the elephant stomps in the wrong place at the wrong time, it will be last place the elephant stomps as the faster hunters who are armed with stronger weapons will easily take the life of the elephant. Again, this costs you nothing and your loved ones are not at risk. Again and very respectfully perhaps you don't need to be telling Americans that we need to do an "elephant walk" or pretty much anything else for that matter.

Ukraine is not a core interest for America. In fact, in the business world it would be known as a "cost center" that does nothing to advance the business, undermines the survival of the business, and should be jettisoned. I fail to see how this is going to be any kind of core interest for Australia either. Then again, telling Americans what they ought to do and cheerleading if we do it costs you nothing and is of no risk to your loved ones. As I very respectfully explain above, the American people are not pawns to be used for the advancement of the interests of someone else.
