U.S. To Reinstate All Iran Nuclear Sanctions

BBC: Trump administration to reinstate all Iran sanctions

The Trump administration is to reinstate all US sanctions on Iran removed under the 2015 nuclear deal.

The White House said it was "the toughest sanctions regime ever imposed on Iran" and targeted Iran's energy, shipping and banking sectors.

However, eight countries will not be penalised by the US for continuing to import Iranian oil.

President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in May, describing it as "defective at its core".

"Sanctions are coming," he tweeted after Friday's announcement, referencing the TV series Game of Thrones and its motto "Winter is coming".

The Wrong Way to Punish Iran

By threatening to penalize Swift, the financial messaging service, the U.S. is alienating European allies and could undercut the dollar’s dominance.

And yet, there is no Iranian nuclear program.

Carl has eyes but can't see. That nuke deal was designed to allow Iran to hide its program. Iran got to declare sites off limits with no inspections for instance.

Iran deserves the pain coming its way. Its malignant influences around the world are widespread even the Dutch today got a taste of it.

And their interactions with North Korea and Pakistan. Both nuclear countries and in the case of Pakistan, it is widely felt that they are instrumental in assisting Iran with their efforts to become a nuclear power.

Just days before the formal snapback of tough economic sanctions on Iran, the Trump administration said Friday that it would grant temporary waivers to eight countries to allow them to continue importing some Iranian oil. The move reflects the administration’s effort to squeeze Iran as hard as possible by choking off a key revenue source, but without driving the price of crude oil higher or poleaxing the economies of some allies in Asia and Europe.
