* The 6.8mm Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifles pack improved force, greater precision and can handle all-weather and terrain encountered by troops
* They're expected to replace outdated M16 and M249 weapons currently in use
* US Army also set to receive advanced night vision and targeting systems in 2019
The U.S. Army is eyeing a new assault rifle that can rip through body armor with the power of a battle tank.
A lineup of Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifles (NGSAR) are expected to be in troops hands as soon as 2022, according to The Military Times.
The 6.8mm rifles not only pack greater force, but also feature improved precision from greater distances and are also able to handle all-weather and terrain encountered by soldiers.

"Shoots with the force of a tank" LOL. Some mil arms program officer fed the author of the article that grandiose line and he ran with it.
The 6.8 is only an improvement over the 5.56. It doesn't beat the .308. And the original SAW/Minimi was developed in .308 and was remade in 5.56 at US Army demand for NATO spec. The only thing wrong with our 5.56 SAWs is that they are completely worn out. The weapon pictured in the article is a SAW for all intents and purposes. Right down to the 100rd 'nutsack'/belt in it.
Ballistics-wise, the 6.8 doesn't beat the .308. Which means it isn't going to do any better against body armor etc.
We'd save a ton of money if we just adopted the .308 Minimi. 40 year-old design. Gobs of belted ammo laying around. Instead we're getting someone's new pet caliber. Padding his future board of directors job.
