Reuters: Russia warns of global conflict over nuclear pact collapse

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Saturday that the scrapping of a Cold War era nuclear pact may lead to an arms race and direct confrontation between several global regions, after a proposal by Moscow was rejected in a United Nations vote.

Moscow had put forward a resolution in support of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) which bans Moscow and Washington from stationing short- and intermediate-range, land-based missiles in Europe.

Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement that the UN had failed to vote in favor of the proposal.

WNU Editor: We are far from the global conflict that the Kremlin envisions. But Russians have a deep instinctive fear of war, and the Kremlin is playing on it.

No one in the West wants war with Russia, the only way war could break out is if either Russia were to want it, or a 3rd party (China or someone else) makes us go to war with each other.

War with Russia would be cool.

There are many good reasons to have one.

Georgia
Estonia
Ukraine
Syria
Collusion

Oh yeah it would be cool.. until the nukes explode.. then it will be hot... and then it will be cool again once the nuclear winter sets in -- see, this war has got it all.. cold temperatures for people who can't stand heat, and thousdands of degrees for those who like it hot :D
And collusion is totally a good reason to kill a few billion people on this planet, CNN told me so. They are never wrong, they've got geniuses over there :D

Maybe the real threat of nuclear war would make the Russians behave.

Invade Ukraine in toot or piecemeal - nuke time

Internet brings down the grid in Estonia or something else - nuke time

Russia (Wagner) invades Kurdish territory - nuke time

Russia backs North Korea and they fire a missile over Japan - nuke time

Anyone who has lost loved ones or had lovee ones maimed for life because of war will understand that war is not something to take lightly. Pethaps one could say this is a "deep instinctive fear of war."

Da Komrade!

Da Komrade! Still nothing useful to add to the discussion I see. The point is that those who have lost loved ones due to war are not going to take it lightly and will even have a "fear" of it. Others hurl childish insults.

We refer to those as keyboard warriors aka pussies. Though I think it's fair to say that war is peace in this current state

Been to war

I think you would rather Russia picks up nations piecemeal take 20 or 30 years, but nothing really rises to you having to take action. Then they have 33 to 1 odds and you cannot stop them.

Germany took over Austria and Czechoslovakia. As Obama would say nothing to get all shook about it. Taking over Czechoslovakia only gave them the war material to outfit over 20 divisions and gave them the Skoda works. Crap that ain't nothing bro.

Nothing like a panzer 38t aka a Czech tank painted in German colors taking out French Car B tanks or British tanks and spearheading the German drive to the Channel. Nothing to get shook about.

"Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, Austria, Czechoslovakia these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union." - Obama

"Czechoslovakia this countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union." - Obama

"The seizure of Czech Army stocks and of the Skoda arms works, second only to Krupp's, represented a major reinforcement of German strength. Hitler’s quick absorption of the whole of Czechoslovakia, included the famous Skoda ironworks, and Germany subsequently used the conquered nation as a Nazi arsenal. The absorption of the Skoda arms works provided valuable alternative information for German designers. The massive Skoda arms firm was producing some of the most technically advanced weaponry in Europe"

Fact: Hitler would not have invaded the USSR in 41 without access to Czechoslovakian industry and war material.

So you let Russia gobble up Ukraine, George and other places and see what happens to your world. The rate of growth will not be linear or predictable. So what you are doing is gambling.

We live in a different world today. Sure, Russia could gobble up Ukraine - easily so. But.. shortly after, containment plans would take place. These plans call for (limited) use of low-yield nuclear weapons and would stop any further Russian advance. Russia's only option at that point then is to continue its aggression and go for an all out nuclear war (by hitting NATO back, which would be suicide), or retreat. Neither option would be good or acceptable, hence most people assume Russia would not invade Ukraine.

BUT.. these old scenarios do not account for a slow invasion of Ukraine, as we have seen over the last years, especially in the first year of Russia invading Ukraine: What Russia basically did is masquerade its own soldiers as "paramilitary troops" and then used this as a cover to say "hey we didn't invade Ukraine". No one believed them, but it caused a bit confusion at the UN and delayed sanctions etc.. this won't work again though, hence Russia is now likely using fake news and other social media operations to instigate an uprising against the current PM in Ukraine, in hopes to replace him with a Russia friendly person. If Putin stays, it will certainly happen -- his major goal is to restore former Soviet Glory, and that MUST include growing Russia territory and influence in the world.. hence also Syria and backing Assad. To him it's all about pushing the West back and not letting NATO grow any further. The neocons in Washington know this of course, that's why we see the endless wars (without clear definition) in many places in the middle east.. it's about Russia (and also Iran, Turkey) trying to grow their influence. They think this is a good gamble. We, the west, don't want anything from the middle east anymore.. we don't need the oil, we don't care about Muslims killing each other, nor do we think we could stop it (HOW?) .. so Trump moves out, and I think it's as good as a plan as the general's who suggest to "JUST MUDDLE ALONG" and "SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE" <<-- this quote was reported in the press just a week before Mattis resigned (and afterwards he was 'fired').. you can tell that the generals and Trump didn't agree on the strategy, and the more I think about it the more I am for pulling out. It's been almost 2 decades(!) and trillions of dollars spent.. if that money would have been spent in research, infrastructure or just economic growth accelerators (lower interest rates), the US economy would now be three times as large as China and China's dream to ever overtake by 2025 (that was their stated goal) would be laughable. These wars have cost TRILLIONS! Just think about how many lives could have been saved at home by investing this in hospitals, cancer research, drugs, infrastructure (lots of deaths yearly because of bad roads).. etc... so yeah, bring them home, or come up with a better strategy that "MUDDLE ALONG"... ffs these generals...

"But.. shortly after, containment plans would take place"

Really?

Democrats would go that in the long haul? I doubt it. Democrats rewrite history and pretend they were all on board when they like the French and Germans wanted to give up and hand themselves over to the mercy of the Soviets.

Even many Republicans are wobbly now.

There is not a day that you can get on the internet without some liberal, Russian or troll downplaying NATO, SEATO and CENTO. For SEATO they will being up Vietnam and when has America won a a war since WW2. You have all seen these jackasses.

If they do not now value SEATO, CENTO and NATO or value it in the past what evidence is that they will not give shorter shrift to containment in the future?

Britain's and France's ultimatum to guarantee Poland's border was an attempt at containment. That sure worked. So containment always works?

containment is like a football or basketball team that is only going to play defense and is never going to attempt to score. You are going to lose 999 out 1,000 games. You would not do that in sports and it is an imitation of battle/war. That is incredibly stupid yet people propose it for real war.

If allowing a dictator or warlord rule over a country and from time to time is the definition of a liberal, then I am not a liberal.
