U.S. Destroyer Sails Near Russia's Pacific Fleet Base In Vladivostok

RT: US Navy sends ship to Russia’s Far East, reportedly prepares to enter Black Sea

An American destroyer sailed off the Russian coast, near the Pacific Fleet base in Vladivostok, in a first such stunt since the Cold War. Another US ship is expected in the Black Sea soon, amid tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

The USS MCCampbell (DDG-85) went into the vicinity of Peter the Great Bay to “challenge Russia's excessive maritime claims and uphold the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea” enjoyed by the US and others, Lieutenant Rachel McMarr, a spokesperson for the US Pacific Fleet, said in a statement.

The US Navy calls such stunts “Freedom of Navigation Operations” (FONOP). The last time a FONOP was conducted in this area was 1987, at the peak of Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union.

"GAME ON." Very respectfully sir, this is no game!! One misunderstanding at the wrong time and place and we are in hot war with arguably the world's most powerful country militarily.

With a massive national debt, aging and in some cases crumbling infrastructure, worn down military from continuing and fruitless military operations around the world, wounded young men from these fruitless operations that we will be spending enormous sums to care for in the coming, and I could go on a new Cold War is something we don't need, can't readily afford, winning it is going to be problematic at best, and even if we do "win" it appears we get nothing of value for this effort.

Is this all worth it? Is this something that somehow advances our interests? Can supporting the corrupt chump Ukrainian government even be justified on moral grounds even if does undermine our interests? Perhaps the answers to all of these questions are in the affirmative. Personally I would suggest for the Ukrainian chumps it isn't. Maybe it is. Maybe there is something I am either missing or don't fully understand. We do need to have a debate on this.

Off topic but of concern as well is the US military is heavily involved in Africa right now all without a public debate on what we are doing and why. Given prior history, I am forced to wonder what manner of mischief is our government getting into over there? What manner of blowback and when will it occur are they setting us up for with these actions? If/when they screw up the heads of my loved ones are on the chopping block.

Maybe we need to challenge Russia here but, very respectfully, this is no game and should not be treated as such. Since apparently our government has decided we MYST do this, we need to prepare properly. The crews should probably expect to be harassed by Russian military aircraft and probably electronic jamming.

Judging by the body language when the leaders have met it appears to me that the Russians (and the Chinese) respect and even fear Trump. As for other US officials, it seems they neither fear nor respect them but hold them in utter contempt. As such, I suspect as long as Trump is in office, we can and probably will avoid conflict. Also, Trump and his team are smart enough and levelheaded enough to continue dialog in back channels such as on the sidelines of the G20 meeting even when official lines of communications break down.

Unfortunately, if the US reaction to the death of a Saudi "journalist" Muslim Brotherhood, Iran "death to America" loving, and OBL supporting is par for the course and it seems to be the same cannot be said about them. These are like mentally ill people or adults in children's bodies.

With that said, one misunderstood move by either side and we have hot war regardless who the top leadership is. This is definitely no game and Trump cannot be in power forever and there is no guarantee that his successor will be as competent as he is. In fact, there is plenty or reason to suspect that his successor will be the exact opposite in terms of competence.

The cumulative effects of such actions as this need to be weighed carefully. Very respectfully I don't think this is being done. Trump's actually policies toward Russia have been tougher than those of his predecessor. Why does he have such an affinity for the eastern Europeans? Could it be he is being unduly influenced by his wife who is of eastern European descent? This is no game and should not be treated as such.
