U.S. Envoy Does Not Believe The Taliban Are Interested In Ending The Afghan War

AFP: US envoy doubts Afghan Taliban's desire for peace

US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad raised doubts Thursday about the Taliban's desire to end the 17-year war, after the militants refused to meet with a Kabul-backed negotiating team.

While he was certain the Afghan government wanted to stop the conflict, Khalilzad told Ariana News that he questioned whether the Taliban were "genuinely seeking peace".

"We have to wait and see their forthcoming steps," Khalilzad said according to a translation of the interview provided by the US embassy in Kabul.

The wait them out strategy.
Didn't work with Nixon when the N. Viets tried it. He was just too brutal with those pretty much impervious B-52's plus opening the door to a thawing of relations with China.

Anon (7:27AM),

The analysis is essentially spot on. There's little I can actually add.

I would say there is little to no downside to leaving along with huge upside potential. After decades of war, a worn down military, and low morale and training across the armed forces the US MUST have peace. If generals Mattis, Kelly, and others must play war games they can do so on board games or on the mobile or tablet devices. At least this way, the American people and our brave warriors are spared further pain as a result of their misguided policies.
