ABC News Online: US Navy ship sails in disputed South China Sea amid US-China trade talks in Beijing
A US guided-missile destroyer sailed near disputed islands in the South China Sea in what China has called a "provocation", as US officials joined talks in Beijing during a truce in a bitter trade war.
The USS McCampbell carried out a "freedom of navigation" operation, sailing within 12 nautical miles of the Paracel Island chain "to challenge excessive maritime claims", Pacific Fleet spokeswoman Rachel McMarr said in an emailed statement.
The operation was not about any one country or to make a political statement, Ms McMarr said.

I wonder how many US and Chinese subs were there too at the time, ready to jump into action if needed. Likely more US subs, as even though home advantage would be on China's side, it's harder to coordinate always to have subs with the ships (which are more in number).. so it's easier for the attacker to choose a time of confrontation with backup in tow
We should continue these Freedom of navigation routes until the Chinese back down or shoot. I am calculating that they will not shoot, and it's all show. Even if they do, they have now been put on the defensive because they would be breaking international laws.
yes..they will always backdown and also take their newly made islands away too
..... or they might dispatch the container fleet. Those lumbering ships can be a hazard at times.
