Angela Merkel has hailed a new Franco-German friendship treaty as being a step towards the creation of a future joint European army.
The German Chancellor said the pact, inked in the ancient western German city of Aachen today, aims to build a 'common military culture' between the two countries.
In a speech during the ceremony, Merkel insisted the treaty 'contributes to the creation of a European army'.

WNU Editor: EU leaders like German Chancellor Merkel have always wanted an EU army independent from a U.S.-led NATO. Today's signing is (they hope) one step closer to accomplishing it. The problem is that they do not have the money to do it, and in the context of how unpopular they have become in their own countries, makes today's exercise even more comical.

It is comical and farcical. It is also just another way for them to show their contempt for President Trump, an in your face move knowing how sensitive his administration is to Germany not paying enough to NATO.
Putin applauds the EU army idea, he's said so in public. He sees it for what it is, Germany and France wanting to break away from NATO and that would be a huge "get" for Putin. Unfortunately they can't come out and say that is their goal.
Just note where NATO spending comes from, the vast majority from non-EU members.

Who will lead the "partnership"? Germany will NEVER accept French authority over their military. Would they? Because it would be predominantly German personnel and materiel manning and equipping this force.
Otherwise congratulations, Europe. You've just anointed Germany the Victor of WWII.
