* China deployed "carrier killer" missiles after warning the US Navy to stay out of the South China Sea, while releasing increasingly hot rhetoric that discusses killing US sailors.
* China has a powerful military stronghold in the South China Sea and plenty of missiles that can outrange and overwhelm US aircraft carriers.
* A prominent Chinese hawk suggested that sinking an aircraft carrier could break the US' will in a kind of "bloody nose" attack.
* US experts agree that China's new missiles pose a risk to carriers and that losing one would traumatize the nation.
* But the US has lost carriers before and, if China is at all serious about its rhetoric, could "bring down the wrath of God" on Beijing in a fight they're not ready for, according to experts.
China responded to a recent challenge from the US Navy with the deployment of missiles purpose-built to sink aircraft carriers, and increasingly hot rhetoric from Beijing suggests that the US' will to fight can be broken.
Chinese Rear Admiral Luo Yuan, an anti-US hawk who holds an academic rank shaping military theory, proposed a solution to the US and China's simmering tensions in the South China Sea in a December speech: break the US' spirit by sinking an aircraft carrier or two.

WNU Editor: Maybe one day China will be in a position where its military has surpassed the U.S. and the threat of sinking U.S. aircraft carriers .... or even sinking one .... would be enough to intimidate the U.S. to "stand down". But that day is far far far in the future, and even then with nuclear weapons China will face "the wrath of God".

No doubt there are those in Washington who are prepared to sacrifice a carrier, along with all those Americans on board to bring this thing to a head. It will be a Pearl Harbor episode only over there.

Hype, it would be pure stupidity if China would try, and possibly sink a carrier. The US is slow to respond but can and will in such a scenario. Besides, we can't let China hold hostage the world with all the commerce flowing through the sea. Pure hype!
I've sailed the South China Sea on a merchantman. There were no pirates back then and no threatening Communists.
Freedom of Navigation is the life blood commerce. Without commerce there is no decent standard of living. Transportation by water is the cheapest form of transportation.
For the Chinese to threaten Freedom of Navigation is to threaten the economies of all the countries of whole Western Pacific and beyond.
I've also been on a warship in that situation. So I have had skin in the game as Obama would say unlike a worthless socialist, who had a cush 9 to 5 job.

If it's internationsl waters and they attack a US carrier there then holy f*ck. China would be at the very least at the opposing side of 100+ countries that do care about international law. So yeah. .China has made an embarrassing amount of mistakes over the last ten years or so, managing to isolate themselves almost completely, but this mistake would take the cake and Xi must know he can only lose and at best get away alive but would be found guilty of war crimes by the US and China who would need the ultimate scape goat...
The only way I see that happen is if other forces with the Chinese military by accident,temperament or to cause an incident, instigate something. ..but they too must know that this would end their lives 99% likelihood. If not by Americans then by the normal Chinese who did not want this
