Is The Canadian Air Force Obsolete?

Canadian Armed Forces Maintainers, from the Canadian Air Task Force Lithuania, await the pilots to disembark the CF-188's to greet them and prepare the aircraft for the coming mission at Šiauliai, Lithuania, during Operation REASSURANCE, in support of NATO Baltic Air Policing, Block 36 on August 26, 2014. But it won't help. With or without used Australian Hornets, the Royal Canadian Air Force's fighter fleet fast is becoming irrelevant. Equipment isn't the biggest problem. Manpower is. But inadequate aircraft contribute to the manpower problem.

The RACF acquired 138 F/A-18A/Bs from U.S. manufacturer McDonnell Douglas starting in 1982. In early 2019, 85 of the original "CF-18" Hornets, all more than 30 years old, comprise Canada's entire fighter fleet.

WNU Editor: When your fighter fleet is comprised of 85 planes that are all more than 30 years old .... yes .... your air force is old and obsolete.

F18's are capable fighters, pilots seems to like them. I wouldn't replace them with F35's going from twin engines to single engines would be a mistake, more so when these are carrier based aircraft and Canada has no real need for aircraft. If called to action they can traverse continents using carriers instead of mid air refueling.

Thing is America who invests heavily in air superiority would never allow their closest neighbours to outperform them in the air, so they are limited to acquisitions without external interference.

The market is limited aswell, F35 is useless to Canadians and their alliances would restrict purchases from Russia. Really they have 3-4 options and the F18 is cheaper, available and local. Like what are their other options? the Rafale, the Typhoon, the F35? Their best bet is to wait, wait for 6gen new generation fighters.

Flying an old jet won't stop or slow down recruitment, see the B-52, B-1B, KC-135 tankers. They are all far older than their pilots in many cases yet the USAF gets the pilots.

What is a problem is not keeping the jets up to date and well maintained. From what I've read, Canada has failed to do so.

As for the best replacement, look no further than the new build F-18 E/F or even more interesting the F-15X that the Pentagon is reportedly considering. Canada might not need the F-35's abilities as a first day, first hour war bird. If so look at the F-15X and its incredible range and weapons load.
