New York Times: President Trump Raised Withdrawing The U.S. From NATO Several Times In 2018

CNBC: Trump reportedly said he wanted to pull the US from NATO multiple times last year

* U.S. President Donald Trump privately said a number of times in 2018 that he wanted the U.S. to leave NATO, according to the New York Times.
* The U.S. leader made headlines last year when he hinted that he could leave the defense bloc without Congressional approval before eventually saying that U.S. withdrawal was "unnecessary."
* Many fear NATO could fall apart if the world's largest economy is no longer a member.

U.S. President Donald Trump privately said several times last year that he wanted to withdraw his country from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, The New York Times reported on Monday.

The newspaper's findings, which cited unnamed senior administration officials, are likely to resurface worries of a breakdown in the military alliance that was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada and some European nations.

Those concerns were first sparked last year when the U.S. leader hinted that he could leave the 29-member defense bloc without Congressional approval. At the time, Trump was pushing member countries to increase spending. Since then, however, the Republican has backtracked on that threat.

ah, Lori!
the art of the deal? the president is to lead the nation not to insist he gets what he has demanded and will not negotiate for any other settlement.
and anon: so what if Pelosi is not in DC when the govt is not in session and the govt is closed down....this is the longest time Trump has not been playing golf! a full 50 days
and anon: lobbyists in P.R.? how many congress people are not besieged by lobbyists and it is the GOP that consistently dismisses tighter regulations about lobbies

Trump tried to bypass Nancy Pelosi and negotiate with members of her caucus. None of them showed up.

polling continues to show the shutdown is a loser with voters, and Trump is to blame. A new NPR/Ipsos polls tells us: “Three-quarters of Americans say the government shutdown, now tied for the longest in U.S. history, is 'embarrassing for the country,'including a majority of Republicans. . . . [and] about 7 in 10 in the NPR/Ipsos poll also say the government shutdown is going to hurt the country, that it will hurt the economy and that Congress should pass a bill to reopen the government now while budget talks continue.” Contrary to Trump’s strategy, “Just 3 in 10 believe the government should remain closed until there is funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.”

The US get out of NATO? Under normal management it would be very unlikely that they would give up their primary means of agitating Russia. Under Trump its a heads up he will, tails down he won't gamble, and if it lands on edge, he will admit that he doesn't have a clue as to whether Ukraine is a NATO member or not.

Ultimately the country/world will come to think of Trump as a broken thing, part of a mind perhaps, filled with fragments of past deceptions and incomplete sentences, occasionally useful as the shards of a broken pot can be, offering a sharp edge but not good for even holding soup.

If we have learned one thing in the past two years, it is to look past the normatively plausible for the truth about Donald Trump.

Because it's right there, in an area light years beyond the normative and certainly far from the plausible, that Donald Trump feels most securely, most triumphantly at home.

Given this, well, reality, is it truly at all a stretch to suspect that the longest shutdown in the history of the United States government, came at the behest of Vladimir Putin?

The real question is why are the democrats so afraid of immigration reform??? All I hear is crickets, and the media doesn't dare (do their job) and go there. Trump is asking $5.6 billion for a $25 billion dollar wall...would you consider that a fraction of the cost as bargaining chip for which the democrats could pretty much get whatever they want out of the deal. It's clear as day what's going on, but it doesn't fit the narrative.

you need to read up on why...you have to ask why trump will not negotiate if he is a deal maker he claims to be. You have to ask why he turned down the agreement made with gop and said NO

How do you negotiate if the other side is off on vacation and won't come to the table? It seems like the dems (with the protection of the media) are just partying their way through the shut down.

What about the shutdown? The partial government shutdown was the top Trump topic in December, garnering 67 minutes of airtime that month, or about one-fifth of the total Trump coverage. (Note that this figure also includes negotiations prior to the start of the shutdown on December 21). And at least in December, nearly 97% of the evaluations of Trump’s handling of the impasse were negative.

If you truly believe anyone but Trump is at fault for the shutdown, you are ill prepared to comment. Even Trump stated that he gladly takes the responsibility for it.
