Reuters: Australia signs $50 billion submarine contract with France after two-year squabble
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia signed a production contract with French shipbuilder Naval Group on Monday for a fleet of 12 new submarines, worth A$50 billion ($35.5 billion), ending a two-year wrangle that cast doubt over one of the world’s most lucrative defense deals. Australia selected the French builder as its preferred bidder for the fleet of submarines in 2016 ahead of other offers from Japan and Germany.
However, final contracts were delayed amid domestic media reports of cost blowouts and production delays.
Australia and Naval Group signed a Strategic Partnering Agreement, the overall contract to guide the construction, to end the impasse.

The Aussies could buy a USN Virginia class nuclear boat for less. I smell a scandal.
As a non nuclear nation, Diesel/electric subs are a good fit for for AUS. The French build good equipment. Of coarse I’d rather have the aussies outfitted with.a fleet of Virginia’s but that boat isn’t the right one to defend themselves (against China) and augment our attack subs and boomers. Besides, the US don’t make no diesel submarines.
Good choice by the aussies. At cost per ship, it’s a good choice. Always thought the Germans built the best diesel boats, though. French came in cheaper.

(and if it becomes a disaster the French can always sell them to Russia. ;)
In our shallow waters these are perfect, also soooo quiet and they will be receiving the next gen propulsion system when launched.
We chose the French sub for 2 reasons. Firstly, it uses pump jet propulsion as opposed to noisy cavitating props. Secondly, it gives us the option of going nuclear should public opinion change in the future.
