Germany had a once in a lifetime opportunity to diversify its energy suppliers to the extent no one supplier dominated their markets. They choose to allow Russia to dominate their markets to the exclusion of American LNG. LNG requires long term investments grounded in contracts. If Germany wants a significant LNG supply, contracts must be signed years in advance of the construction of LNG degasification terminals. Gazprom with its Nordstream I and II will make sure its gas is priced low enough that Germany can never close the business case.

So years go by Russian gains a firm control of German energy supplies to homes, factories, schools. This gives Moscow a voice in Berlin, NATO HQ and EU HQ, anywhere Germany has a voice.
