Reaction To President Trump's State Of The Union Speech

WNU Editor: I personally found his speech to be OK. No real surprises. His critics have another point of view .... Donald Trump 2019: Same lying racist he was last year (Salon).

During the address, while POTUS did dtop short of using the "exceptional," "indispensable," "superpower," or "hyperpower," ridiculous nonsense to describe America, he did refer to America as definitively the most powerful military force on earth. While this could be the case, it is far from certain. As such to state something as fact that isn't proven and while evidence to support the claim can be presented there is much evidence to refute such a claim has no place in a state of the union address.

This would have been something the "fact checkers" could have pointed out to the best I can tell they did not. If they can't detrct this glaring flae, I'm not sure we xan trust them to do much ekse.

Is America the most powerful military force on earth? POTUS did and has touted his efforts to rebuild our military. General Mattis also highlighted his efforts to increase military capabilities. So IMHO the answer is more likely to be "yes" today than it was likely to be "yes" on the day Trump was inagurated BUT it is FAR FROM CERTAIN and I will reiterate had no place in a state of the ubion address.

I take it as a given that American foreign policy in the 21st century has been an unmitigated disaster. I believe a large part of the reason why is because American leaders have consistently overestimated our power and influence while consistently underestimating the power of adversaries and potential adversaries.

While I hope and pray not, it appears as though DJT may be about to make the same mistake. Hopefully this part of the speech was just "ear candy" and most Americans know better than to embrace such things. If something is taken as given fact that may not be true and has a large body of evidence available to suggest it is NOT true as this statement does AND the analysis turns out to in fact be in error and policies are set in motion and implemented based upon the flawed analysis, failure and disaster are likely to be the end result.

While I trust most ofbour citizens are smart enough to know better, there is potential of giving the wrong impression which has the potential to lead to errant policies. Bottom line: this part of the speech didn't need to be there and shouldn't have been. At best, it's counterproductive.
