Results From Cuba's Referendum On Its New Constitution To Be Announced Today

Reuters: Cubans appear to ratify new socialist constitution

HAVANA, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Cubans appear to have overwhelmingly ratified a new constitution that enshrines the one-party socialist system as irrevocable while instituting modest economic and social changes.

Results from Sunday's constitutional referendum, which saw over 80 percent of the 8.7 million electorate cast ballots, were expected Monday afternoon.

There are no exit polls in Cuba, but citizens could observe the count after the polls closed in their neighborhoods.

Cuba's best-known dissident and pioneer blogger, Yoani Sanchez, who runs an online newspaper from a barrio known for its support of the government, wrote she braved insults and yelling to witness the count in her precinct of 400 yes votes and just 25 no votes.

Update: Cubans vote on new constitution keeping Communist rule (DW)

WNU editor: Being one who has had more than his share and experience of Communist run elections and referendums .... I am deeply skeptical of this one. The campaign and vote was controlled by the Communist Party (who are also telling everyone that they must vote), and the final result will be announced by the same Communist Party at the end of today. I am just curious on how many the government is going to announce voted for the constitution. If I was a betting man, I would predict a 90% approval number.
