AFP: Putin to give annual address as popularity slides

Russian President Vladimir Putin will deliver his annual state of the nation address on Wednesday as he faces an unprecedented fall in his approval ratings.

It will be the 66-year-old leader's first address to both houses of parliament since he was elected to a fourth presidential term a year ago, extending his long rule until 2024.

Last year, Putin used the address to unveil a new arsenal of weapons in a nearly two-hour speech that stunned the West and many in Russia.

Speaking two weeks before his re-election, Putin promised Russians higher standards of living and hailed Moscow's military might as relations with the West reached post-Cold War lows.

After the speech he enjoyed his highest approval rating since he came to power in 1999.

WNU Editor: I expect nothing new in his address.

Blabla brain diarrhea dog whistles. .blabla Trump is racist. ..magaJets hats are racist. .people who want borders are racist. .but we, who call half the nation every word in the book for more than two years now, we are the good ones. sorry to disappoint you, schoolyard name caller. This might interest those who are not girly boys and care about information

Associates of President Vladimir Putin of Russia have channeled as much as $2 billion through offshore accounts, banks and shadow companies, according to a massive leak of documents from a Panamanian law firm.

CNN vs Fox vs what ever other news media members there are, it is all the same. Above the line producers the owners are united in one objective, more revenue from clicks, advertising and the state of the country be damned.

Taking sides politically is the strategy to produce that revenue. People who fixate on the trumped up details, positive or negative depending on their bent, are their lawful prey.

Members of all political parties tend to do the same.

The people of any given country can be divided, turned into mortal enemies, debating the contentious issues many of which are immaterial and/or fony.

Bob--
of course, news outlets are in the business to make money, do business, or they would fail. But that does NOT mean that they all are equal in objectivity etc. google, for example, which cable show has the most retractions, falsehoods...compare NY Times to say, NY Post ...so: as not all beers or scotch or even women are the SAME you go to that which best seems tops, has record to prove themselves, etc
Any number of hard copy magazines and papers either closing down, or going into digital or combining or paywalling, etc...what does this tell us: Media must keep up with technology, with trends (ie, many get news from Facebook), and yes, click important to stay afloat.

I am glad you agree with my comment about media requiring profits. The point however is that paying attention to the talking heads without doing one's own validation is what keeps the pot brewing and the division widening.

I do not believe we are far apart on this. However, cable news, in the business to make money, more often than not will discuss the stories they consider important for the day. And in so doing, the anchor or anchors will usually have 3-4 pundits, ie., people believed to have some awareness of the topic, to give their point of view. It is then up to the viewer to accept or discount what gets said. At best, the assembled pundits will represent a variety of points of view. This is at times not the case, so that a wise viewer would also consider this when listening to views presented.

Lapides,
Excellent advice. Why don't you follow your own words?

Agreed. I just have so little to do these days the temptation to goad the peanut gallery is to enticing. In the spring I will be helping my son build his house and the waiting is onerous.
