Islamic State Fighters Still Hold Onto Their Last Scrap Of Territory As U.S.-Backed Fighters Prepare To Launch Their Final Attack

Daily Mail: From caliphate to car park: ISIS fighters hunker down in makeshift camp beside battered vehicles on their last scrap of territory as US-backed fighters prepare to move in

* ISIS fighters hunker down in a patch of waste ground surrounded by battered pick-up trucks, cars and tents
* US-backed forces have forced the militants into the last scrap of land as they are pushed out of the 'caliphate'
* Trapped militants camped alongside a sea of small pickup trucks and caravans scattered across a riverbank
* Families gathered in cluster of vehicles and tents on water's edge as they were cornered on last piece of land
* Head of US Central Command, warned many of those evacuating are 'unrepentant, unbroken and radicalised'

ISIS fighters hunkered down in a riverside camp surrounded by battered vehicles and makeshift tents in eastern Syria today as US-backed forces pushed to expel the militants from the last scrap of their dying 'caliphate'.

Thousands of men and women have poured out of the pocket of territory in the village of Baghouz near the Iraqi border in recent days, their wounded, and dust-covered children, in tow.

The extremist group created a proto-state across large parts of Syria and Iraq in 2014, ruling millions of people, but has since lost all of it except a tiny patch in Baghouz by the Euphrates River.

The last IS fighters and their families were cornered on Friday among a dense gathering of vehicles and tents on the water's edge, caught between advancing US-backed forces and Syrian regime fighters across the river.

Fanatics are scary. And there's an aspect of mental illness to it, I'm sure. The fanatics in many wars - whether it be today's Radical Islamists to Germany's Nazis or Russia's Stalinist's.. millions died because of crazy ideologies.. sure, you could argue that Radical Terrorists haven't killed millions in Western countries yet, but realistically, they have killed millions all throughout the mid-East - just sum it up.. it's multiple millions.. perhaps not 20 millions as Stalin, but it's up there. And we need to start treating it as such -- there is a disease among mankind that clearly affects all our well-being and we need to start to address that. It's not religion. It's a radicalization of your mind, in my opinion. Whatever the goal - Nazis were for example not very religious.. some were in death cult sects, and some looked for religion on the battle field (who wouldn't), but they were not thought of being very religious, rather atheists and nihilists... and this nihilistic thought pattern is also a bit present in Terrorists, perhaps, with a sprinkle of afterlife .. glorification of death nonetheless. And what about homegrown shooters who spray bullets into schools, clubs and concerts? That's a form of nihilism too.. people who crash planes with passengers on board, also has a nihilistic, control-freak nature/dominance nature to it.. it's all perverted death wishing people who are sick, mentally sick and we need to ensure that we treat them (not for being nice) .. the short term treatment currently is a bullet through the eyes, and I'm ok with that in the absence of a better alternative, but we need to look long-term and address the underlying mental health issue that powers this radicalization and ideologies. If you think they are all sane actors, then we need to look at the economic reasons or political (e.g. extortion) that drives them to joining these "clubs" .. it just feels only the military aspects are addresses, which means we spend trillions and nothing changes.. where are the social sciences on this? Why does the military have to fix what would be their (social scientists and politicians) job?

Religion is just a means to accomplish radicalization and relies on human inner need of justification for success. Other forms of radicalization, nationalism for instance, use basically the same techniques and can create the same sorts of problems.

Scholars have failed to agree on a definition of religion. There are however two general definition systems: the sociological/functional and the phenomenological/philosophical.

Emile Durkheim defined religion as "a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say things set apart and forbidden - beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community called a church, all those who adhere to them."

Max Lynn Stackhouse, defined religion as "a comprehensive worldview or 'metaphysical moral vision' that is accepted as binding because it is held to be in itself basically true and just even if all dimensions of it cannot be either fully confirmed or refuted".

Scholars have failed to agree on a definition of religion.

But Bob, he knows! He knows cuz he is so smart!

He is so smart he made a lot of money. Every once in awhile he make a supreme effort get some money together, take the GF out to McDonalds, order off the dollar menu, and then regale us with the tale on how hard life is.

Anon has difficulty in both reading and comprehension or he/she would have realized that I wasn't defining religion, but the effects it, and of course other things like nationalism have on people.

He/she seems to not realize how many people have been killed in the name of God an entity, probably fabricated for the purpose, who absolutely loves war and killings, the more brutal the better.

But, Anon I do have some small bit of appreciation for you given that you believe/dwell on the crap I feed you from time to time. That and planted spelling errors which you seem to love responding to is the only way I know you at least attempted to read what I posted.

Bob is going to discuss the effect of something without being able to or wanting to define it.
