Draw a group around a people that make make up 1/5th of the world. If they are relatively free and can keep a decent percentage of what they want, then the political entity described by the perimeter will be in the top 5.
But China speeeeciaaal!
Chinese so proud
so deservedly should be #1 foreverandeverandever

This is strange way to divide things up. Using the modern borders of countries and going back in time as to what each GDP was for that territory is a strange way of viewing economic history of world.
On one level, it is interesting. But it is very likely to lead to all sorts of errors by people. In AD 1, there is no Italy, but the entire Roman Empire, and India is divided into many kingdoms and empires. Even China is much less extensive than what it is today.
I think it would be more interesting to see what actual states were the top three economies of the world at each time - Roman Empire, Han Dynasty China, Parthia, and then move onto Holy Roman Empire, Tang Dynasty China, Safavid Persia, Ottoman Empire, Mughal Empire, British Empire, etc. And of course, the big question - do you count the EU as one entity?
