CNN: US Navy declares newest stealth fighter jet ready for combat

The US Navy says that its version of the F-35 fighter jet is now ready for combat.

After more than two decades of testing and development, the service announced Thursday that the advanced aircraft has achieved Initial Operating Capability, meaning it passed the proper tests to be flown on missions.

Thursday's announcement comes shortly after the first squadron of Navy F-35s completed aircraft carrier qualifications aboard USS Carl Vinson.

"The F-35C is ready for operations, ready for combat and ready to win," said Vice Admiral DeWolfe Miller, commander of Naval Air Forces. "We are adding an incredible weapon system into the arsenal of our Carrier Strike Groups that significantly enhances the capability of the joint force."

Never again make a fighter starting with the name Joint. Those three variants are almost three completely different jet aircraft.

There's an advantage of shared systems. ..BUT..when you overdo it, complexity increases by so much that it gets difficult for humans to process. It's like cooking but you need to plan ahead and fine tune ingredients to fit with all your dishes. It can get extremely complex and I would argue that the above comment has a valid point. I wouldn't go so far and say never do it again because you do learn a lot and typically find new technologies and processes and means of optimisation ...BUT..IT does come at a huge cost. .development time. ..and also going forward every shared component the evolves over time needs to always be looked at through this 3d prism of shared fighter components. It is a daunting task. In software development the payoff is clear: shared code typically means faster, smaller code. ..but as soon as you hit that complexity threshold, it goes downhill. .you make errors and it takes actually much longer to think things through and innovate. And that complexity threshold is lower than you might think.. often 3-4 dimensional variables are enough to give most programmers a headache. I wonder how much AI they used in streamlining the hardware and software components. Considering how long it took I'm thinking they did it all manually, old school. It's a bit insane to do it this way but explains the price tag and delays and mishaps. It really reminds me of a large software project with shared code basis across several systems - and I wonder why they did it. I don't see the advantages in such a huge project. I would rather simplify and separate the use cases. Procurement costs certainly didn't go down, but went up instead and they must have known this. ..
