Reuters: Canada's golden boy Trudeau sinks in polls as scandal takes toll

OTTAWA (Reuters) - When Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took office in late 2015, he was a political golden boy who seemed destined to build on the legend of his father, who led the country for more than 15 years.

But six months ahead of an October election, polls suggest the 47-year-old politician with the broad smile and a penchant for colorful socks could become the first prime minister to lose power after a single majority mandate since the 1930s.

Trudeau is mired in a relentless scandal over alleged interference in a corporate corruption case that has led to the resignations of two Cabinet members, his top advisor and the head of the federal civil service.

The ruling Liberals have lost 6 percentage points since the start of the year, ceding the lead to the rival Conservatives, according to a Nanos Research poll published on Tuesday.

If an election were held now, the Conservatives would win 34.9 percent of the vote, the Liberals 32.8 percent and the left-leaning New Democratic Party 16.6 percent. The poll suggests the result would be deadlock or a fragile minority government.

WNU Editor: I live in Canada and I follow these things very closely. The polling company that is quoted above has IMHO always given results that favour the Liberals. I think the spread is a few points more. This does not mean that Prime Minister Trudeau is going to lose in the next election. The election is still 6 months away, and anything can happen. But being accused of interfering in a criminal case to help a company with ties to his political party, and the expulsion of two key cabinet ministers because they have lost confidence in his leadership, has hurt him. But what my really hurt him is the economy. It is starting to slow down, and that may in the end be his biggest Achilles Heel.

It's funny how many articles talk about how Trudeau is presumably in trouble without mentioning the contender Scheer.

Unless Scheer starts reaching out and countering the Trudeau narrative with some real messaging, they will have a tough time.

Trudeau is buying votes with the very timely climate incentive rebate, paid in advance and collected on the 2018 tax return, of a minimum of $150 or about 30 minutes at a Casino. I get $169, the extra because I live in a rural area. That rebate is scheduled to go up each year.

It doesn't sound like much but, if you are liberal voting inclined, the scandal won't change your vote. Remember the PM in Canada isn't running for the office of Prime Minister. He gets it because he is the leader of the party that wins the election and of course assuming he gets his own seat. People changed from the PCs for a number of reasons.

Women who "hate" Jody Wilson-Raybould who according to the females I know only turned on him because he wouldn't give a post to someone she wanted won't change their vote. Also that rebate is more than enough mainly because it is a slap at Ford.

$150 is about what I have in my loose change coin jar, not much really but for my friend on "poggy" it almost covers her $240 yearly hydro bill. There are many like her in Ontario.

$240 yearly hydro bill?!?!?!?!?
That is impossible. How does she heat her home?

She heats her small house with gas and is quite stingy at that. I have seen the hydro bills as low as $17 and change. She is benefiting from a program set up by the previous government with a commitment for 5 years. Obviously her income is rather minimal.

My hydro bill is $74 per month all in.

I heat my 1,600 sq ft house with gas and recover more each year from another Ontario program than I spend but then I do like a cool house. When I bought the house 12 years ago I paid $6,000 to install a gas furnace and ducts. Still have the baseboard heating in place just in case.
