Editor's Note

I have a power failure in my neck of the woods. I have been told that it will be restored within 6 hours. Once it is I will be back to blogging.

Update 17:00 EST: I have been having sporadic power shortages all day. Apparently a major line was damaged, and there is too much of a load on the existing system to satisfy people like me. We are heading back to Montreal right now, and regular blogging will return in the next few hours. World News Briefs and Military and Intelligence News Briefs will return tomorrow.

I live in a farming/rural/cottage area and have for 25 years. Initially I found that out outages happened often and took a long time for repair. That has improved considerably over the years as hydro stepped up a defensive program of tree trimming not only along road ways but in the off road more denswly treed areas as well.

Within year of moving up here natural gas lines were installed over a large area and basically everyone jumped on that greatly reducing electricity demand as apart from some wood and propane stoves most people used electric base board heaters.

Following the gas line expansion a lot of people put in back up generators powered by natural gas. They tell me they work wonderfully kicking in very quickly when hydro fails.

I'm not sure if propane will do the same but as it is delivered by truck I imagine the costs would be relatively high.

Today I come to you with so much excitement!
