Reuters: Ukraine passes language law, irritating president-elect and Russia
KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine’s parliament approved a law on Thursday that grants special status to the Ukrainian language and makes it mandatory for public sector workers, a move Russia described as divisive and said discriminated against Russian-speakers.
The law, which obliges all citizens to know the Ukrainian language and makes it a mandatory requirement for civil servants, soldiers, doctors, and teachers, was championed by outgoing President Petro Poroshenko.
He is expected to sign it into law before he leaves office in coming weeks after losing re-election on Sunday to Volodymyr Zelenskiy, an actor who mainly speaks Russian in public.
Ukrainian is the predominant language in western Ukraine, while Russian is predominant in much of the east. Both languages are spoken widely in the capital Kiev, and a large proportion of the population speaks both fluently.

WNU Editor: This law is causing widespread anger and condemnation throughout much of Ukraine. The move to abolish Russian in schools is what is causing the most blow-back. Soon to be former ex-President Poroshenko pushed for this law when he was campaigning for the Presidency, and even though almost 75% of the electorate voted against him, he is still going to sign it into law. President-elect Volodymyr Zelenskiy has vowed to abolish this legislation, but to do so can only happen after parliamentary elections later this year, and if his party wins a majority of seats. As it stands right now, the current parliament's approval rating is around 7% - 10%, and almost all of them will be turfed out later this year replaced by Zelenskiy supporters. But in Ukraine nothing is guaranteed, and there is now talk among parliamentarians to delay the election till next year.And as for Russia .... this feeds into the Kremlin narrative that the Ukraine government is inherently anti-Russian (which in my opinion they are).

I believe in a 1 country 1 language.
I also believe in not suppressing a language (which the French are very good at), so Russian should be taught in schools. Schools as I know them encourage or mandate kids to learn a 2nd language. Having that second language to be Russian in many schools would be a good thing.
In America it costs a lot to print everything up, have interpreters for, etc for multiple languages.
Trucker crashed in Denver on I 70. He claims his brakes failed. You can always run into the ditch and avoid others. Word on the street was that he had to have the Texas Driver test for the CDL read to him in Spanish; we shall see. This multi-lingual thing is working out real well.
This is dumb. Just hardens a significant portion of the population that already is alienated. They should make Ukraine more hospitable than Russia. How hard would that be.
The Spanish speaking Cubans in Miami know they are Americans but I have no problem being the only English speaker in the bakery trying to order pastelitos de Guyana. Those are so good.
There is NO language requirement in the Constitution.
If public accommodation discrimination is wrong, how can a person not discriminate, if they do not speak the language of the country?
Once a shop owner speaks the language of the country and have that base covered, if they want to speak to customers in other languages that is their business.

I know an ethnic. They are white and your typical puerile liberal would never consider a white person an ethnic. They are an American citizen born in the US and are culturally American. They are a little bit culturally the culture of their parents homeland. Literally the mother's tongue and father tongue is not English. So English is their second language although they have been speaking it since or before they left the home. So they know their mother's tongue quite well. When they said they were taking a language course in their 'native' language at uni, I questioned it. They said technical terms and business terms are not something you pick up in normal day to day discussions. That made sense.This ethnic was upgrading his knowledge of his mother tongue in order to prosper in international business. He had a head start, since he was bi-lingual. Kids should be encourage to be bi-lingual.
However a government should not have all it s documents in duplicate, triplicate or worse. There is a cost.
The is a cost and an opportunity cost to learning languages. If not, every computer programmer would learn them all. They would never be turned down for a job for not knowing a language.
There is a cost just holding things like inventory. We call it carrying cost.
A nation should have 1 official language. This doesn't mean that the citizens do not speak other language, but there needs to be 1 official language.

If you think a govt should have but one language, then make it a law...thus far, it is NOT a law in the US...now ask why we do not pass a law to make English our national language.

we do not now pass a law for one language because politicians do not want to lose potential Spanish votes...yes, both parties. We should have English as a legal language because all of our founding documents are in English...there, happy boy now? But we will NOT pass such a law. Too late. There is a schism between national level Republican leadership and the base. This was shown in 2007 when John McShame and GWB tried to pass amnesty. They could have got it done, except no wall had been built. The 1986 amnesty was passed and effective border control was not in place. The 2006 border Act was passed and after it is passed by Republicans, not enough wall went up soon enough to get people believing that if they pass amnesty the wall would still get built.
Republicans did pass the 2006 Border act. Then Nancy Pelousy, the person, who hires non-union cheap labor, and Barack Obama got into power and fucked over the @006 Border Act.

The Democrats are trying to, lie to us again.. they are saying we need a smart wall using technology. It was a dog of a Democrat, Janet Napolitano, that in 2011, who said a smart wall with electronics was infeasible, too expensive and could not be done. This gave Obama cover to cancel the wall. Some executive that turkey is. He was suppose to faithfully execute the law of the land "The 2006 Border Act" and he failed and maliciously so.
