The Guardian: Merkel: Europe must unite to stand up to China, Russia and US

German chancellor also shares views on Brexit and climate crisis in interview

Europe must reposition itself to stand up to the challenges posed by its three big global rivals, China, Russia and the US, Angela Merkel has said before her final European election as German chancellor.

Facing challenges that range from Russian interference in elections to China’s economic clout and the US’s monopoly over digital services, Europe needs to get better at putting up a united front, Merkel said in a wide-ranging interview shared with the Guardian.

“There is no doubt that Europe needs to reposition itself in a changed world,” Merkel said in a conversation in her office in Berlin. “The old certainties of the post-war order no longer apply.”

Stand up to the US? Ok, NATO and the UN should be revised then.

Revising the functions of NATO and especially the UN is long overdue. The UN should be moved to another country located in perhaps Switzerland.

I actually agree with moving the UN. The UN has been used to facilitate espionage against the US and other various activities that undermine our interests and sap our strength all at enormous cost to us with minimal to no benefit. Furthermore the property currently occupied by the UN could be put to gainful use. GOOD RIDDANCE to the UN!!

As for where to move it, I certainly wouldn't want it if I didn't and have it and since we do have it I wish it would leave. I'm not sure why a supposed neutral country like Switzerland would want the headaches and costs associated with this or why they would want to allow the various nefarious elements associated with the UN in their country unimpeded as has been the case with the UN in America. They can see what a bad experience it has been for the US. "Stable and focused" people generally don't duplicate the mistakes of others especially when they are easily observed.

As bad as the UN is, I believe it should remain where it is. It does provide a locations for nations to work together and speak to each other and keeps the US the center of the world.

Why is she still in office? We voted for her because she was a woman. We did the politically correct thing and have been paying for it dearly for years now. Her immigration policy was a disaster, she clearly works for Putin now so why not get rid of her? What good has she actually done? She helped destabilise the European union more than Putin could have hoped for in his dreams

What I meant is: If she is going to be a trendy b*tch like that, the cost of the UN should be distributed equally between member nations. Currently the US pays 28.4% while Germany, for example, pays 6.4%. (Germany still indulge the exact same UN powers as the US)

We all know the story with NATO.

I would love to see some gratitude instead of this adolescent behavior.
Do that before the US will withdraw, which they are considering, from the UN (effectively making it obsolete) and start something like the "Democratic Nations."

While I suggested Switzerland I would be agreeable for the UN being moved say every 10 years to be hosted in another country. Certainly there are those that could afford the cost of providing the physical facilities similar to what is now the norm, but imagine the surge for economies in say small African countries. Imagine the experience those puffed up ambassadors would gain staying in grass and mud huts next to herds of cattle, starving children, eating everything from clay bowl. It might change the perspective of some people/countries.

When I was talking about moving every 210 years "I (Bob) was talking out my anti-pie hole"

How are you going to finance that Bob?

The UN already has extensive facilities in Austria and Switzerland. You did not know that, because, well Bob you do not know much.

Bob, which village are you from? We could call them and tell them that you a missing. Undoubtedly they know, they celebrated when you left, and it would take a king's ransom to get them to take you back.

I would suggest relocating the UN HQ to Bermuda, Ascension Island, a small island in the Pacifica near the International dateline or a small island near Antarctica or on the Antarctic peninsula. Some place small and boring where they have an incentive to get to work vote and then go home ASAP.
