MSN/New York Times: To Stand Out, the Army Picks a New Uniform With a World War II Look

The United States Army wanted a spiffy new service uniform, one that would stand out in a tough recruiting environment and polish the Army’s image after a generation of grinding and divisive wars.

So it turned the clock back. Way back.

It chose a new uniform that looks almost exactly like the old green gabardine wool field coat and khaki trousers that officers wore in World War II. Probably not by coincidence, that’s what the Army was wearing the last time the nation celebrated total victory in a major war.

They have had the ASU (dress blues) for only 9 years and it needs to be changed because...? What a huge, pointless waste of money. I mean the pinks and greens look nice, sure, but it's just a dress uniform. Dumb purchase.

the new ARMY dress uniform presents a very professional appearance. This uniform distinctly radiates the "American Soldier". Whether out of respect for the Greatest Generation, or just a much needed change the new uniform is OUTSTANDING!

MARINES have not changed their "Alpha's" Green dress uniform for over 100 hundred years. The battle history of the Marines won't allow that change.

Alex,

I don't even recall mine. I'm sure I wore it once. Then a few years later I was outfitted with a complete new dress uniform when I enlisted in the CA National Guard for a few years. That one I never wore. So yes, what a waste of $$$.
