U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is making his first visit to Moscow as America's chief diplomat next week to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin for face-to-face talks.
Trump is looking to move past the special counsel investigation into Russian election meddling and alleged collusion and spoke to Putin by phone a week ago on Friday.
If Trump's call was the carrot, Pompeo's coming with a stick, the State Department signaled on Friday.
'The starting point we have to have when we discuss our policy toward Russia, and this is part of what diplomacy does, and the secretary's trip, is to acknowledge frankly that Russia has taken a series of aggressive and destabilizing actions on the global stage,' a senior official said Friday.

This can be a productive meeting if Mr. Pompeo and those involved understand certain things with regards to geo political reality. Forbes actually somewhat gets this. Depending upon which list of world's most powerful people are consulted Putin is either the most powerful or the second most powerful person on earth.
When Mr. Pompeo and his team prepare for the meeting and conduct the meeting, they need to approach it from this perspective. Putin is either the most powerful or second most powerful person on earth and we are going to need his assistance and that of the country he leads in a number of areas if we are to successfully represent our interests. At the very least, we are going to need to find some kind of accommodation where they are not opposing us in a number of key areas.
I wouldn't expect this meeting to solve everything but if approached properly it can provide positive movement towards reducing tensions. America's foreign policy for the 21st century has largely been an abysmal failure. IMHO this is largely because America's leaders fail to recognize the multipolar nature of the world and act accordingly. POTUS has said it well when he pointed out that good relations with powerful nations and powerful people are a good thing and are helpful to us. This meeting if done properly can be a positive step in this direction.
