Reuters: No 'boots on the ground' in Iran dispute, Trump says; cites 'unlimited time' for new deal

WASHINGTON/GENEVA (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he was “not talking boots on the ground” should he take military action against Iran and that he had “unlimited time” to try to forge an agreement with Tehran.

Iran suggested it was just one day from breaching a limit in the 2015 nuclear deal that restricted its stockpile of uranium, a move that would pressure European countries aiming to be neutral to pick sides.

The fate of the multilateral nuclear deal, under which Iran agreed to curbs on its nuclear program in return for relief from economic sanctions, has been at the heart of the U.S.-Iran dispute which took on a military dimension in recent weeks.

It is entirely up to Iran whether there is war over the Persian Gulf. The US's position is staked out and Trump is happy with the status quo, tough biting economic sanctions on Iran at no cost to the USA. Iran is trying to find a counter to get back to the 2015 status quo glory days where it reaped economic benefits at no cost to its ambitions.

So what's Iran to do? Wage war? Hardly as that would cause immense pain to its patrons around the world, particularly China and EU nations, facing ruinous oil import costs. I think she wants to stir up worries in America's allies to pressure Trump to back off but do it short of war. Trump has made clear his red lines with Iran, no attacks on Americans in that region. So Iran has plenty of running room to cause mischief short of that. Unfortunately for Iran, Trump has said he has no responsibility to protect other nations people and gear so Iran can't impose new costs on the USA. Perhaps Iran will wage a terror campaign against American targets outside the middle east with its proxies? Perhaps in Europe? Recently it has been caught staging explosives in Britain for just such attacks.

So far, Trump is holding the high cards.
