MOSCOW/TOKYO (Reuters) - Russia and the United States blamed each other for a near collision between their warships in the East China Sea on Friday with both countries accusing one another of dangerous and unprofessional behavior.

Russia’s Pacific Fleet said that the USS Chancellorsville, a guided-missile cruiser, had come within just 50 meters (165 feet) of the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov which had been forced to take emergency action to avoid a collision, Russian news agencies reported.

Well, the video shows that the cannon was not pointing in direction of the US ship. That's at least something.

one mistake by a rookie captain though - e.g. giving the order to point the cannon in the direction of the US ship - could lead to a more serious confrontation though..

Did they narrowly avoid hitting each other, or, narrowly missed hitting each other?

Judging by the wakes of both ships it appears the Russian ship has sped up as it closed with the American ship. It also appears the Russian ship has done a bit of zig-zag just before the acceleration.

Nonetheless this appears to this landlubber to be aggression on the part of the Admiral Vinogradov.

If you look carefully the American Cruiser was landing a helo, and couldn't move. It looks like the Russkie was trying to hurt or kill the pilot, IMO.

Warships have been doing this for as long as there's been navies. Its typical Soviet style harassment. The Russians know for a fact that the Americans will yield rather than get into a paint scrape with a Russian destroyer. The Americans know the Russians are drunk/stupid enough to not care if they bump into them.

Its annoying and moronic, but not an act of war. The Russians had a belly laugh - sunbathing and gundecking as they sailed past.
