7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Southern California A Day After Magnitude 6.4 Quake Hit Same Area On Thursday

A powerful earthquake rocked Southern California for the second time in as many days on Friday.

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit about 11 miles from Ridgecrest, the town in Kern County which was very close to the epicenter of the magnitude 6.4 quake that was felt on Thursday.

While the United States Geological Survey measured 7.1, the European Mediterranean Seismological Agency said the quake was a magnitude 6.9.

The tremor late Friday was felt as far as Las Vegas, where the NBA canceled its Summer League game between the New York Knicks and the New Orleans Pelicans

I'd love to report serious drama and mass chaos, but there isn't any. Except on TV.

A reporter posited to the geologists that the quake may have occurred above ground.

/which would be impossible.

Thanks for the feedback RussInSoCal. I was thinking about you and two other friends in southern California. Talked to my brother in San Mateo (South of San Francisco) .... he felt nothing.

We live in SoCal also but didn’t really feel this one, we felt the one yesterday though. My wife and I are both survivors of the March 11,2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan so we’re taking stock and preparing just to make sure. I remember back then power was out for a while, water lines were broken, gas rationing, not a lot of food. We don’t want to end up in a similar situation so we’re not taking any chances this time.
