Germany assisted in Afghanistan.

Amnesty International has stated there were human rights abuses by Assad. They were stating the obvious, but hey they had to get their 2 cents in and 'earn' they paycheck for their sinecure.

Assad put down protests with police state tactics.

I guess R2P is just a theory to Merkel.

Well, if they don't want to contribute, then it's time to scrap NATO! Really.

Bob has 3 modes.

1) Bob will wait until, someone takes position, then he will attack it.

2) Or Bob will default to some anti-American view point such as America is the root of all evil in the world.

3) Or Bob will tell a joke and be chummy, so that you like him and take #2 more seriously.

Okay Dave

I just read through the posts and Mike's caught my eye.

"NATO’s essential and enduring purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of all its members by political and military means. Collective defense is at the heart of the Alliance and creates a spirit of solidarity and cohesion among its members."

Emphasis on "collective defense".

A lot of what has been going on in the Mid East some of which spilled over into Syria, was the result of the unwarranted and criminal Iraq II war out of which the creation of ISIS was quite notable. Iraq attacked no member of NATO and there is no requirement for NATO members to assist in wars of aggression. Those that do, do so on their own initiative outside of NATO and I believe have a responsibility to stay involved until the ramifications of such activity have been resolved.

I come to this site to learn about what is going on in the world relative to wars and things that lead to wars and disputes. In this environment of "professionals" I am just an amateur having no military, no quasi ambassadorial experience to bring to the table. I do have a reasonable level of common sense and know right from wrong.

I do not allow political affiliations to clutter that understanding. America, being our next door neighbor is of significant interest to me and I have met lots of Americans in business in particular and in my life in general. I have no love or hate for Americans, or people of any nation, but what Americans as a people have done in the world is atrocious and is continuing. Pointing that out is reasonable and necessary, particularly on a site like this one.

All I can say regarding you being offended by my comments, which you obviously cannot refute so you revert to insult is that if you are being honest, I pity you. It must be hell being you, someone who gets a kick out of spewing insults to someone who served in the military and who has seen and done things you can only imagine but will never aspire to is the worst of the worst.

BS! The internet is a catalogue of your anti-American statements.

The IRAQ War II was not illegitimate. Apparently, you do not know what an armistice is or what happens when it is broken. It is not you soft lily white tush monitoring the no fly zone being painted and worse. Iraq was suppose to release Kuwaiti prisoners and around 200 never came back and were not accounted for. But they are brown people and I understand their do not stand very high in your racist estimation.

ISIS is a spin off of Al Qaeda that began in 1988. It is a creation of the Muslim. Brotherhood. ISIS split off when the Syrian wing got big and decide to call the shots.
ISIS was Al Nusrah wing of the AL Qaeda until the broke away.

Al Qaeda was going to be in Syria despite anything we were going to do. If we did nothing Al Qaeda would have been in Syria and had been there since 2001. Assad used to assist them infiltrate into Iraq. They knew the area well. They had personal knowledge. After Assad put down the Arab spring demonstrations and put political protesters in prison, it was inevitable that Al Qaeda would be in Syria fighting Assad. You do not know right from wrong and you have no good sense. You have common sense; you are a herd animal.
