France says armaments were meant for 'self-protection' of counterterrorism unit in Libya but were 'unusable'.

The French military said on Wednesday several Javelin missiles found in a rebel base in Libya were purchased by the French government from the United States but were defective and were meant to have been destroyed.

In a statement sent to reporters, the army ministry said the missiles were intended for the "self-protection of a French military unit deployed to carry out counter-terrorism operations".

"Damaged and unusable the armaments were being temporarily stocked at a depot ahead of their destruction" the ministry said adding that "they were not transferred to local forces".

It is the first time since 2016 that France has publicly acknowledged it still has special forces deployed in Libya. It is not clear how many troops are deployed.

The French are in Libya, a warzone?

Pssshhht, it ain't so.

How do I know? The resident anti-American will often regale us with his sage wisdom that America is the source of most if not all evil in the world.

It as if Russia, China, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Turkey, France, Britain, Jordan and other had no agency but were mere props on the world stage.

It's pretty well understood amongst your so-called "America haters" that it was Britain and France that pushed hard for the US to join them in Libya. Usually it is the other way, around but western Europe still has a very paternalistic attitude towards west Africa. France is no angel, especially when considering their quasi-colonial relationships with many of Libya's neighbors. I don't exactly see how this makes the US any less culpable for playing their role in Libya's destruction. Operation Odyssey Dawn might not have been his idea, but he was too weak to resist the pressure and America deserves the stain on it's credibility for creating this situation alongside it's allies.
