Daily Mail: Supertanker 'carrying Iranian crude oil to Syria in violation of EU and US sanctions' is intercepted in the Mediterranean by British marines

* Vessel is suspected of carrying crude oil from Iran to Syria in breach of sanctions
* Raid was carried out by Gibraltar police and customs, alongside Royal Marines
* Syria has been under EU sanction since 2011, and Iranian oil was also sanctioned by the US in May last year after Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal
British Royal Marines and officials in Gibraltar have detained a supertanker suspected of carrying crude oil to Syria, in breach of European Union sanctions.
Marines from 42 Commando dropped on to the vessel, dubbed Grace 1, via rope from a Wildcat helicopter early on Thursday while others approached on rigid inflatable boats.
Around 16 officers from the Royal Gibraltar Police then boarded the tanker, which was thought to be carrying oil from Iran to a refinery in Banyas, Syria, to supply the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
Spain's acting foreign minister Josep Borrell said the mission was carried out by Britain at America's request - amid tensions with Iran.
