NBC: Senators warn Trump admin not to bypass Congress again on arms sales

"Don't make the mistake of thinking that it is simply Democrats who are concerned about this," said GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

WASHINGTON — Senators from both parties on Wednesday accused the Trump administration of overstepping its authority by pushing through arms sales to Saudi Arabia and other Arab allies in May without congressional approval, and vowed to reassert the role of Congress in reviewing weapons deals.

Lawmakers vented their frustration at a hearing with the State Department official overseeing arms sales, C. Clarke Cooper, telling him the administration had failed to make the case why $8 billion in weapons sales had to be expedited without time for congressional oversight.

"For whatever reason, the administration — in what seems to me a not fully baked decision-making process — decided to circumvent the law, decided to circumvent the constitutional responsibility of Congress and act unilaterally," said Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

The US has to work with at least a few governments in the Middle East or we will have no influence at all.

Lebanon is out. It is a Syrian pawn.

Iraq is problematic. you have to fight Iran for influence.

Iran is a no go. You cannot make an agreement with anyone who says "Death to America".

Oman is good, but Oman by itself is not sufficient.

Jordan is okay, but by itself is not sufficient.

Jordan and Oman are not sufficient

Congress is so dysfunctional right now, I would not trust them with anything. Move forward Trump!

McConnell is called the turtle for good reason.

He is there more for the money than anything else. He is as worthless as Boehner and Boehner was a loser.

Boehner is representing the dictatorship of Angola. At least Boehner is honest now. He is an out and out prostitute.

The only reliable allies we have in the Mid East are Israel, UAE and Saudi. If the US quisling congress is intent on halting the influence of Russia and China into the ME, they definitely need to be bypassed.

Russ
there is something called the constitution and Congress has the say in money matters...or do you simply dismiss the constitution as old fashioned junk?

THE QATAR SUPPORTER ADVISING KAMALA HARRIS

"Qatar enjoyed unprecedented access and influence in the Obama era. The Arab Spring brought many of its Brotherhood allies to power across the region before Saudi countercoups helped topple them. The struggle between Qatar, Turkey and Iran, and the Saudi-UAE coalition, has rippled through the media and the D.C. political establishment with flash points such as Yemen, Iran, and Jamal Khashoggi."

Stephen,

I don't like Islam. I don't much like Saudi Arabia, but a person has to choose. In choosing not to choose, a person none-the-less makes a choice, which helps one side or the other.

Choosing a side does not means you are with them forever. It can be a temporary alliance.

I choose Saudi Arabia over Iran and Qatar. 5 or 10 years from now I might choose Iran over Saudi Arabia. For instance, if the mullahs are gone.

Its funny how important the Constitution is to Dems when its in their narrow anti-Trump political interest. Otherwise its, "laws be damned". Arms sales to Saudi should not be interfered with by a raging partisan Dem majority in the house - just because they hate President Trump.

/And you can spare me the recreational outrage over the Khashoggi murder.

(I did misspeak/write in my above post - should have said, "If the US quisling congress is NOT intent on halting the influence of Russia and China into the ME, they definitely need to be bypassed.
