Reuters: Chinese ship inches closer to Vietnam coastline amid South China Sea tensions

HANOI (Reuters) - A Chinese survey vessel on Saturday extended its activities to an area closer to Vietnam’s coastline, ship tracking data showed, after the United States and Australia expressed concern about China’s actions in the disputed waterways.

The Haiyang Dizhi 8 vessel first entered Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) early last month where it began a weeks-long seismic survey, triggering a tense standoff between military and coastguard vessels from Vietnam and China.

The Chinese vessel continued to survey Vietnam’s EEZ on Saturday under escort from at least four ships and was around 102 kilometers (63 miles) southeast of Vietnam’s Phu Quy island and 185 kilometers (115 miles) from the beaches of the southern city of Phan Thiet, according to data from Marine Traffic, a website that tracks vessel movements.

The Chinese vessel group was followed by at least two Vietnamese naval vessels, according to the data.

Just make a damned joint company and split the profits 50/50, 30/70, or 70/30 or something.

I figure the Paracels belong to the Chinese based on a Ming claim by Zheng He. The Vietnamese claim is based on French colonialism. Do the Vietnamese really want to go there?

Any claim south of the Spratly Islands is extremely stupid by China. They should invest by whatever nation owns that area if allowed and if it is evenhanded.

For the Paracels I might suggest a 70/30 split to make peace with the Vietnamese although their claim is weak to non-existent.

The Chinese also have a claim going back to the Ming and well into the Qing dynasties. Considering the 19th century Chinese history, if I were Chinese I would want some non-minor part of the Spratlies.

Now what do you think Blackdog?

What I am suggesting is joint development.

Or we can have a war. War is fun.

@blackdog that's exactly the point. Good analogy. The Vietnamese feel like robbed. At the point of a gun/barrel. The Chinese use military and intimidation to force other nations away. And if you look at the map where they do it, you can understand the Vietnamese. Especially because on top just a couple years back a Chinese company fucked up all their fishery with iron ore disaster. They didn't have fish for almost a year. That's why I'm so glad Trunp is calling out the Chinese because they are not just stealing from the USA but from Malaysia, the Philippines, Europe IP theft is also in the hundreds of billions. Collectively around the world the Chinese they must run above 10 trillion. That's Germany's GDP for 3 years! That's how much they stole. We are thousands and thousands per houshold that has accumulated over the years in theft. And then share? Like they stole so much already and then use the military to get natural resources. That's like war just that the Vietnamese cannot fight back. But they are preparing as good as they can. If Trump manages to make a deal they could be a powerful ally and provide a harbour and airport close to east China etc

What about the British and French claims to the South China Sea?
