CNBC: How global military spending hit a record high
Global military spending increased to a record $1.8 trillion in 2018 — the largest amount since the Cold War.
It’s also about 75% higher than post-Cold War low in 1998.
These spending numbers come from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a Swedish-based think tank that has published widely sited global spending numbers since the 1960s.

Its amusing when you compare the military spending of the likes of India with that of the United Kingdom. One has an aircraft carrier, nuclear ballistic submarines and stealth strike fighters. While the other has the second largest standing army on the planet.
Vietnam is a prime example of personnel multipliers, where smaller numerical numbers continuously fought and won against larger forces. But as we progressively spend more and more money on reducing manpower, so does the price tag and more importantly lucrative maintenance contracts.
The fact spending is up, highlights a trend toward reducing manpower in the armed force and more towards personnel multipliers, and this will be the sale pitch far into the future. We are so afraid of death that its the best selling point. Truth is some people kill others, and other people catch bullets, try not to make them the same people.

North Vietnam had the whole Chinese army behind it.
Generally you cannot defeat, those you cannot invade. All you can do is stalemate them for awhile. We were not going to invade North Vietnam although they deserved it and get into a war with China.
That and a Demonrat congress cut aid.
